Current requirement question for Le Clean

How hard and fast is the 500ma current requirement for the Le Preamp series (specifically Le Clean), as it's the one I own)? I ask because most external power supplie,s like the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power series, seem to max at 400ma on their 12v "High Current" outputs. Is that sufficient? I've noticed that if I don't pay attention and plug the 300ma supply for the Torpedo C.A.B. into the Le Clean, I get a pretty serious hum, which I assume is from the transformer for the 200v tube circuit trying to draw more current than the supply can provide.

What options are there for a pedalboard power supply that can properly power the Le Preamp series? Do the isolated 400ma outputs work, and does it have to cleanly supply 500ma?
 
The actual current draw is dependant on many parameters. As usual, 500mA is a safe upper limit, factoring in the worst case scenario on term of use, various tolerances and precisions, temperature, and so on. Most of the time, Le Preamp draws around 400-450ma. But that does not mean it won't draw 500mA, if the conditions change.

We tested many "400mA" outputs on many PSUs. The result is terribly simple : some work, some don't :) Most of them can supply a little more than 400mA, but then it's often a matter of how much current is drawn overall on the same PSU, how high (or low) the mains voltage is, how long before it overheats, and so on...

Long story short : you'll have to try and see how it goes :)
 
Just a little addition after an email exchange with John Clark at Voodoo Lab — he says that there should be no problem with either the Pedal Power 4x4 or Digital as long as all the other outputs aren't being run right up to stated capacity. As he put it, "just plug that bad boy in and rock out!"

If there are any problems I'll post a followup here, but having knowing Josh and John at Voodoo Lab for 20+ years and their approach to design and engineering, I trust that there's enough built-in "fudge factor" to deal with it.
