When I had the 5881s and then the Svet 6550s in my Mod 50 over the past few weeks....I realized I accidentally had the Rocktron Xpression set for -10 dbs in the loop! Sounded like garbage for two weeks this head! I was wondering what was going on! I had no volume, all tubes sounded terrible to me...

I realized it last night

...switched back to +4! WOW - The Svet 6550s sound HUGE! Round! Thick! Oh my!!!!!!!
Thanks Eric...

They don't quite go all the way in snug like other tubes because they hit the retaining screws.

Ah, I think I remember that Eric and folks take out the retaining screws/clips in order to use 6550s. Correct?

Clips yes...screws no. you need to replace the screws. I'll go down and look at my mod 50 soon to find out if I have the same issue. Don't remember it doing that though.

Well Ill be damned. I wouldnt have thought that Rich would like 6550s. They are so clean and round sounding with none of that grindy mid sag of a driven EL34. Wow.

You must have had them cold man. They are clean and round...but they aren't THAT clean.

But's just my opinion :). Opinions are like assholes...everyone has one..and they all stink! :)

They just make the amp sound bigger and fatter. Notes are fatter for sure....really smooth and even sounding, really full on every channel. Balls out the whazoo! Biased at 47.5/48.5

I am ordering tube retainer kits because I don't trust them. I am hoping they include screws to get the tubes more flush. Since the stock screws stick up higher than the sockets....the tubes don't go all the way in...almost! Still works! I guess they are good as long as they are snug.

Eric, did you check your tubes yet? I decided to buy retainers and counter sunk or more challow screws to get the 6550s closer.

Have not had a problem and been running them hard but not in my Mod50,it's the only tube upside down but I did run them in there for a while very hard and they did not fall out or shake loose, but I did rattle my neighbors roof tiles off

I have used Svetlana 6550's in my RT2/50 without retaining clips for some time now and I think they are great tubes! Thanks Eric!! Use TungSol EL34B's in the other channel and they smoke, too.

I agree with the 6550/E34Ls combo,it sounds fucking huge,I run the same in the Mod100 and same shit.......HUGE!!!!!!

I was checking with a friend to see how he was doing with the mixed tubes in his MOD 100 and said he ended up going back to either all 6550s or all KT88s. I agree, the Svet 6550s are massive in my Mod 50. Sounds and feels more like a 100 watt head now.

Another good friend has a KT88 quad in his Randall RM100 and man does it sound nice.

I really need to try the 6550s I guess. Ugh, another damn tube purchase...

They are well worth it my friend. The Svet 6550s are still "my tube" of choice. They are just BAD ASS tubes :)
