I recently bought a rebel 20 off craigslist for $300. This is my first tube amplifier. I was pretty happy until last night it 'popped' and the output cut out.

The 'pop' as pretty quiet (it was much less than the amps output volume at the time was) but the output immediately stopped. I had stuff to do so I turned the amp off and left it until today.

The jewel still lights up. The fast blo fuse reads 0ohms. When I turn it on now, let the tubes warmup and flip from standby to play there is a good bit of buzz (not super loud).

So I I found the rebel-20 and 30 manuals on line. I tried a debugging step described in the rebel 30 manual to (page 10, #4) 315mA Fast BLO fuse) and neither the 6v6 or el84 causes the fuse to blow. I'm not sure this test is still valid for the Rebel-20.

Only other exceptional thing I can think of is plugging anything into the effects loop causes some pretty significant buzzing.

At this point I've got the chassis out and I'm just looking around. I don't see anything unusual so far. I am an engineer and but I know mostly low power DC, digital logic, embedded stuff. Tubes and amps are new territory.

Where to go from here? I was thinking trying new preamp tubes but I don't want to waste $60 so I thought I'd ask here first.

I found some revisions of the PCAs inside:

PRE_PA_V13
JACKS-LVPS 1.2

thanks!

Forgot to say I have always used the 16ohm output to plug into my VOX 1x12 with a 16ohm celestion greenback in it.

It was a preamp tube. These all look like OEM stuff (they say egnater on them) should I just order replacements for all the tubes?

I would, yeah. Then I would test the originals and keep the good ones for spares. Always a good idea to have a few extras around.

With a preamp tube, you don't have to replace them all, just the bad one is enough. But,like Len told you,it's always a good idea to have a few spares...especially,if the amp is second hand.(Btw,if you look well, you should see the brand's name behind the Egnater one)

Unplug the cords in the effects loop, it happened it cut out on me like that for a loose plug in !

Both my Rebel 30 & 20 have redplated power tubes .
Bruce really opened up the power and with 369 plate voltage whew you really need to keep a eye on the tubes,i just leave the back metal cover off mine.
40vdc bias per pair is pushing hard on some brands of tubes.
I bought a 8" fan !
Keep a close eye out for replating and crackling sound is a indication as i found out 6V6 !

I changed mine from JJE34ls(too hot)/6l6s(too strident)Mesa 6v6s(redplating!) and finally settled on JJ 6V6s'(just about right). I liked the tone of the E34ls but checked the plate voltage and took them out. The JJs' are big bottle 6V6s that sound more like 6l6s' in a good way in this amp and are pretty durable.
