Delay "pops" in Renegade effects loop

Hi Bruce or Jeff,

First I want to say that I love my Renegade 65w 1x12 combo! Really a professional tube amp with lots of tone options and such a cool foot pedal to boot! Just gigged with it last night at a big concert and got rave reviews from fans.

The only issue I've been having is when I run my delay effect (Boss DD-3) in the effects loop i get a "pop" noise as the delay hits the amp and speaker almost as if the signal output from the delay is too hot. But after lowering the effect level on the stompbox and even pressing down the amp's effect loop button inside to lower the level it still happens. Any idea what it could be? Maybe a preamp tube issue, digital delay box issue?

Any ideas will help since I haven't had this problem with other tube amp effects loops I've worked. Again all that said, I really am enjoying the diversity of tones one could get with the Renegade using either a humbucker or single coil guitar.

Thanks!

Hey Welcome aboard!!!!Does it pop with other pedals?

Does it pop when you step on the pedal or when you use the amp's loop bypass button or both? Does this pedal pop when you put it between your guitar and the amp?

My dd3 suked in the renegade. Sold the dd-3 kept the renegade hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! :D

Bruce,

The delay pops or clips with the stompbox on through the effects loop and with the amp's footpedal effects button on as I play. The pop is more evident on the clean channel versus the overdrive channel probably since the pop or clipping sound mixes in with the distortion more readily.

I haven't tried running the Boss DD-3 separately with guitar straight into the delay pedal and direct into the amp's input and preamp but will try that today and see what happens.

Hey Bruce and friends,

I just tried running the Boss DD-3 straight into the amp's main input instead of the loop and no pops or clipping. And then I ran the delay pedal again in the loop as before and heard the pops again. I noticed that when I put the bright toggle switch down on the clean channel that the pops were not as bad even using my Strat. So I guess the signal from a single-coil guitar definitely brings that pop/clip sound out more, but is lessened when I attenuate the bright switch down.

My thought was to maybe try another delay pedal like an analog delay instead of the digital delay and see if that changes anything...but I'd have to buy another pedal. Any ideas?

I know someone else posted and said they got rid of their DD-3...did you have the same problem as me and what delay did you get to replace it?

yeah I use a dd-20 and a digitech hardwire delay..
My xtc doesnt like the dd-3 either..
Both pedals I have work great through the renegade..
It also farted alot ya know the delays were real distorted and not clear..

The delay pops when I turn it on or off when running in 4CM with my RM50 combo, RM100 head, or with headphones going into the RP1000 I am getting the delay from. It has to be the effects unit in my case.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to post an update. I traded in my Boss DD-3 at GC towards a Digitech Hardwire DL-8 Delay/looper pedal. After alot of research reading various online store and gear reviews and Youtube videos the Hardwire was the best option next to the MXR Carbon Copy, but the Hardwire just had so many more options for the price.

And most importantly the Hardwire is super clean through the Renegade effects loops and NO POPS which was simply the signal clipping through the DD-3. Great pedal with so many cool delay options and cool accessories too. The "higher voltage" technology of the hardwire pedals is true and works great.

As some online reviewers stated the Boss pedals along with others do buffer the signal. Switching on/off the effects switch for the Renegade clearly audibly shows the signal drop with Boss pedals in the chain. Upon someone's suggestion I did run the signal without the 2 remaining Boss pedals I have (TU-2 tuner, and Tremolo) and the signal was at the same volume level as the amp when the effects switch was on. When I reintroduced the Boss pedals the slight audible drop returned.

So just a word to the wise...the volume drop is very slight and people in the audience will probably never notice but if you're a tone freak just be aware. But Hardwire pedals are the real deal!
