I am a recent owner of a renegade head,,,loved it never used the tubes that came in it replaced them with out even trying the amp with them installed..
Soon sold it and now Ive just bought a new 212 ,
well it arrived and sounds utterly horrible.
Did the tube change make that much of a difference in this amp??
I have a couple new eminence speakers for it two as Im not a celestion fan at all..
Can you guys chime in before I tear this sucker apart lol..

If it is new, why not just try exchanging it for another one before tearing it apart and maybe voiding the warranty? If you don't like the second one then go for it.

Describe "utterly horrible." That has no meaning on its own. Mine sounds fabulous!

its not new or I would do that
new to me as in bought from a studio
utterly horrible as i figured since its the same amp as the head i owned the distortion would be clean and c;ear and have good over tones etc ,,,this sounds like mush. Looks like you have a tourmaster in your pic?? Did you switch to the Renegade?

Honestly, I don't understand the logic of modding (even if the "mod" is a tube change) any amp prior to hearing what it sounds like stock. How do you know what tone you're modding it from? I'll bet you salt and pepper all your food before you taste it too....;)

I have the stock tubes in my Renegade 212 and have been playing it for 1.5 years now. It sounds fine. Awesome in fact. And it has sounded better and better over time. I'm assuming this is due to the speakers breaking in.

It is a warmer amp than other amps I've played. One man's "warm" is another man's "muddy". But it sounds incredible in the mix, which is all that matters to me.

I can't imagine anyone describing my tone as "horrible", so I'm guessing you may want to replace your tubes. That can have an amazing impact on your tone. I've started wondering how I would change my tubes when the time comes. I'll probably try to make the 6l6 side of my amp as "American" sounding as possible, and my el34 side as "British" sounding as possible. But for now, it sounds fine so I'm just going with the stock tubes.

Good luck with yours. Let us know which tubes you land on.

What cabinet did you have the head plugged into? My first thing before you "rip it apart" would be to plug back into the same cabinet you used before, and see if it sounds right to you. It is more thank likely you just not liking how the 212 combo sounds. If you've got some speakers that you always like using, then try putting those in. But before anything else, I would unplug from the combo speakers, and run the amp into a cabinet you are familiar with, and like the sound of.

Yes I did have a Tourmaster. Got tired of the weight after three years and got a Renegade. Great amp!

I agree with two prior suggestions: Plug it in to the other speaker cabinet, and try some new tubes.

no I dont salt and pepper my food and for as many amps I go through I usually know after couple of minutes
1. If its gonna fly
2.If tube change will help
3.Speaker change will help
as ive owned the head version of this and ran it through many differnt cabs.
I changed the sovtek wa tubes immediately cuz well they suck which I didnt due in this instance which is why I asked,, and rip apart meant put new tubes and speakers in it.
No salt and pepper lol
:gethim:

And a tube change helped quite a bit,,still dont like the speakers.

Honestly, I don't care what you do, but how do you know the tube change helped quite a bit when you, "replaced them with out even trying the amp with them installed.."

That's the only point I was making. Glad you've got some tubes that work for you.

Like some people here must know by now,i own a Renegade head. It's plugged in my old Marshall 4X12,basket weave w/ original Greenbacks. It still got the stock tubes after +1 year.I didn't want to mess with it since the sound was awesome as is :) and as long as it stays that way...It's funny because ,with my M&B combo,i was swapping tubes like crazy and ,at the end,it was always a compromise of some sort.I did learn a lot about tubes during that time but i wasn't satisfied with my amp's sound. With the Rebel20,i did change a few tubes and i know,at some point,i will do the same with the Renegade,if only because tubes are not eternal..But i'm not in a hurry :) .
