I’ve found almost all the Suhr guitars I’ve played to sound sterile. If you’re like me and after Tone rather than aesthetics then I think there are much better guitars out there both in that price range and for less. I know others will disagree though

I also tend not to like poly guitars unless it’s a very thin finish. Tends to make the guitar sound kinda choked or suffocated/doesn’t breath and can sound plastic-y. Imo such a waste of good Tone wood when they do that

What are some of your favorite brands? Have you tried any Andersons?

Can you elaborate on plastic-y?

I am not discounting your experience, but my experience has been the exact opposite. I love the amazing tone of each and every one of the three Suhr guitars I own..... YMMV...

Yes, worth it. I love mine...
Hey man, is that a Modern Satin or did you have one made to be / look like one?

I ask 'cause the wood pattern is prominent and makes the look of the guitar. My Satin looks anaemic. I can't do anything about the lack of pattern, but I'm gonna stain it to pretty much the same darkness of your one I'm referring to. Off-the-shelf it's the same shade as the headstock on your maple-necked FL geetar on the left of your pic.

Well I honestly mostly like vintage guitars best for their warm, organic sound, but so far my favorite modern guitar is this Dean Gordon I just got made for me (will make a thread about it later), the Custom Shop Charvel’s I have are great (especially my Sassafras one), my Vik Duality is great too. The McInturff Carolina Custom’s sound killer, but are more of a ‘59 LP style guitar. I honestly feel many “boutique guitars” I’ve played tend to be great or even immaculate in every way until I play a few notes. Maybe I’m spoiled by my favorite vintage guitars but they tend to mostly sound comparatively sterile and uninspiring. And I’ve done more than my fair share of AB comparisons and pickup swaps and comparisons. One of my favorite guitars made today are actually the EGC’s made entirely out of aluminum. It’s a very different kinda sound, but imo phenomenal

I’ve tried a few Tom Anderson’s and thought they sounded just ok, but I don’t think I’ve played enough yet to make any firm opinions on them. Suhr’s, though, I’ve played lots of them and just don’t like them

A lot of the guitars I’ve owned or tried with poly finished (like the last PRS Custom 24 I had) tend to have a plastic-y sound to my ears. I feel they lose a lot of the woody sound, but if the finish is thin enough I don’t hear that quality as much. Just something I never liked and was a shame because that last PRS I had looked beautiful and played really nicely, but sound wise was a loser imo

Fair enough. It’s very possible I might like some with the right specs or need to try the right one, but I have played I wanna say at least 20 already over the years, many of which were going for over $4K. I also generally do AB comparisons before I make any real opinions I have on gear and so far that’s just my take on them

I guess I’m the odd one. I love my Suhrs and I love my PRS. I have 3 custom Suhrs and a Pro. Each of them is amazing.

When you get a great Suhr, it’s unbelievable. I have had a couple moderns that were straight up duds. But I’ve had a couple that were amazing.

right now, I have a Reb beach signature model I acquired about a month or so ago, and this thing is straight up explosive. The notes just burst from the fretboard. It’s the most lively guitar I’ve played in a long while. It plays effortlessly, and sounds so ram hood through my Friedman. It has an Aldrich in the bridge and I don’t like that pup at all, but I can deal with it in this guitar quite easily until I get something else. Usually an Aldrich would bum me out, but I happily accept it in this guitar.

this Suhr rings out SO LOUD unplugged. It’s basically completely incredible.

I really want to try that Knopfler Suhr, the standard with a 3/4 maple top, Brazilian or ebony fretboard, mahogany body, and maple neck, with the EMG h/s/s and a Floyd.

so yeah, I have had a couple duds from Suhr. They were kind of lifeless and didn’t sound very good. They were stiffer feeling to play.

but the good Suhrs, watch out. They are basically as good as they come. My Reb is truly incredible. It’s an 09 I believe. All the best suhrs ive owned seemed to be a bit older. I don’t have a clue as to if they were built with more care/took more time back then, or what, but this 09 Reb, a 10 standard, and a 2010 modern are by far the best suhrs I have owned.

They're usually pretty impeccable. I have a few Suhrs and they're all killer. I'd suggest giving them another go.

I’m surprised to hear finish flaws like that in any high end guitar like that, especially $5k, wow that’s surprising. Damn. Sorry to hear that.

Same here, mate. I had a Modern Pro Bengal Burst that sucked ass. Cold, lifeless, scratchy-sounding and stiff-to-play. I sent it back.

My Modern Satin HSH with Gotoh, OTOH, even at roughly half the price, sounds superb. Warm but not-muddy and the straightest fretboard / neck I've ever had. The neck is much-fatter than the Pro, but I can live with that.

A lot of you guys here really know your stuff so I’ll try more later if I get a chance. Any particular specs, models or years to recommend?

I will say again I’ve played at least 20, owned a modern satin and a bunch of guys I’m friendly with with similar taste to me seem not to like them either, but I’m always open minded and don’t wanna cross stuff off my list until fully warranted
