With so many different formulations of Pb free (or Pb included) solder I often cause myself issues when desoldering existing electronics. Eutectic freeze out/incompatibility of my solder being one of the more frequent bundles of joy.

So, you have a tried and true method for desoldering that doesn’t cause you headaches? Thinking especially when it comes to the back of pots (pickup wiring)….

I just add lead solder to the joint I’m trying to remove then…remove all of the solder. Adding new solder helps to heat the joint faster.

I use desoldering braid and never have problems. Just put the braid roughly in contact with the solder joint and heat it (the braid) with the soldering tip, after a while the solder joint goes into the braid and you're done. It's really the easiest method. A friend of mine who is a has been a pro repair man for decades taught me. I asked him about desoldering pumps/stations etc. and he told me "it's useless crap, just use desoldering braid".
