I’ve had this 1980 JMP for years. All stock except for a Metro loop in the factory speaker jack holes. I saw Jason from Headfirst had posted a video with schematics for the JEL mod. Credit to him for the specs.

I decided the mod sounded like a great plan for this amp. And it’s fully reversible. I also changed the input to a ground-shielded coax cable. The stock hot shield kills treble and adds flubby bass.

I’m extremely impressed by this mod. The amp sounds like a great Marshall should. Just enough gain and good frequencies.

I made a clip last night at bedroom volume. Gain is around 6-7 on the dial. It fills out more at higher gain levels due to the bright cap still in place. I like it here for more cut.

Les Paul with Suhr Aldrich into a Cameron 4x12 with G12H30 anniversaries.

I added a VFE Standout to the front end and switched over to a different Les Paul with Throbak SLE-101+ and got this:

That’s it! ^^^

He doesn’t change the input to my knowledge, but that’s very important, in my experience. Should be done to all of them.

I’ve know about the stock hot shield, but am lazy to tinker. 😂. How did you end up doing it?

Sounds great! I think the JEL100 was just a tweaked Smallbox circuit but Dave made is more raw liked a traditional Marshall since Jake still plays loud live and to my knowledge still boosts the JEL100 with whatever OD he is using at the moment just like he always has... black cat OD, Boss OD1, Boss SD-1 on an on.

Jake was using the Majik Box Body blow when I saw him in 2019 using a Friedman smallbox 50 watter. The way he was running the smallbox his low end was a little mushy but overall it sounded good. Jake is a big plexi and superlead player with JMP's in the mix as well. He sounded great with the EVH amp as well.

Lots of upper register for sure.
Seems to lack lower mids & girth for my taste at least thats what the clip sounds like.
Ive never had problems getting upper mids from a JMP 2203.
My preferred weapon of choice.

All damn day! Yes!

I am quietly shopping for a second Marshall of some type and that tone would be high on the list. Maybe a Plexi this time. I run them through a Power Station so I can get the volume up on the amp and not kill small animals. Or people.

Gain is at 6-7 on the dial. As you know with a 2203 circuit, it gets much more lean at these settings with a factory 1000pf bright cap. If you bump the gain to 8 or so it fills out a lot. I prefer the tighter, more cutting tone so I leave it lower. No lack of low end in this mod if you want it.

Many ways to skin the cat. You could change the fixed depth circuit… use a different depth cap, etc. heck you could wire up different depth circuits to each output jack. Cameron told me this was done to one of Aldrich’s amps.

I don't have the desire to go much further with this amp. Simplicity is the name of the game with this one.

However, I am going to experiment with adding a SAT switch. With no extra holes drilled. Total sleeper amp. That's as far as I'll go with it likely. I have other amps to go crazy on.
