First off...I am the absolutely ecstatic owner of a Herbert and an Einstein. This week I bought a 2007 VH4 from nbarts...Should be here end of next week...BTW, he's a great guy and I appreciate his patience with my many questions prior to pulling the trigger...So, I am wondering if you guys wouldn't mind throwing your two cents in on volume setting on the respective amps and channels. What I mean by that is do you like channel volume up riding the master down or channel volume lower with a higher master volume...I would suspect that higher settings on either would push that respective section a bit harder, but I am not an amp guru, just a humble player, so I am not really sure...Your opinions are much appreciated...

Mark

If this topic has already been beaten into submission, I apologize for the post. Just point me in the right direction...

Hey Steve...Yep...Bought nbarts VH4....Looking forward to adding to the collection...Thanks for the VH4 settings....Much appreciated....In regards to my post, I had always ran my channel volumes up around noon on all the channels with the masters at 8:30 or so...I have started trying variations with the channels down at 9:00-9:30 and pushing the master up a bit to see how the amps react...I suppose that pushes the power tubes a bit harder?

Mark,

I prefer the VH4 with channel volumes around 11:00, I wouldn't go lower than 10:00, because it starts suffocating IMO. That's said master needs to be at least at 12:00 for the amp to sound right in my experience. The only channel that might need more volume is ch1, which seems to be lower than the rest. Ch3 3 with gain at 1:00, volume 11:00 & master around 2:00 sounds amazing, one of the greatest tones on the amp IMO, but it's really LOUD; I even dig it more with EVM12Ls. Ch2 is my all around favorite, so many cool sounds here at different gain levels; I'm actually gonna miss it the most.

Thanks for the kind word BTW.

why did you sell it nbarts? getting the Recto you've been eyeballing? :)

Them knobs are made for tweaking! Just deal with a channel at a time and see what works for you - depends on what you are after. But, this amp really shines when opened up to breathe a little. I pretty much always live on Ch. 3. For what I play, Ch. 1 and 2 could be taken out of the circuit and be OK. Sometimes I pop over to 4. You will find it much more compressed than 3. But for 3, my favorite settings are:

Gain: 2:00
Vol: 11:00
Bass: 1:00
Treble: 3:00
Mid: 9:00

Then, on the master EQ, kick the bass up to 12:00 and the presence around 2:00. This scoops it a bit, but is what I like. Its not for everyone and I am always running two amps and it is what I am going for. Lots depends on the cab too. If you are using a flubby cab, you might not get what you are after. Your next investment with Diezel needs to be a front loaded 4x12. You will be in awe....

Get you a piece of paper and experiment. Write down what makes you go, oh shit. It is probably not practical to try and EQ all 4 channels and leave the knobs alone for channel swapping. You will find a couple channels you like and stay with them 99% of the time. I don't use any distortion or OD FX at all, so that has some impact on where I go. If you find one channel you like for most of your stuff, don't forget about using the channel inserts. This is one of the greatest features of the amp, other than tone. Also, you can patch Send 2/Parallel return together and use this as a boost, once you get some midi control.

I'd tease you but I just sold my SLO...

Ah, this guy again! :D   ;)

I was actually already arranging a payment for FortinAmps's SLO, when all of a sudden I've discovered some serious health issues. So instead of buying the SLO I ended up selling my Uber. I'm not able to play a guitar for more than 30 minutes now, after that I feel like I'm going to pass away. Now if the VH4 goes I'll be staying with a single Herbert which I'm totally fine with. I just want to dick around with some amps for fun, otherwise it looks like I won't be able to do much music if any pretty soon.
That said my Herbert will most likely be cremated with me. You are welcome to come over & spit on my coffin. :D

On the VH4 I have always liked the channel volumes around 11 0'clock ish or so and the master volumes around 10 and up. I rarely put the channel volumes past 1 o'clock. This works for me really well but it is loud for other. For me, I have already lost some hearing so I can handle it :D

The higher the volume, the less bass, deep and sometimes gain you will need. By less I am talking very minimal here.

I am pretty sure I have lost a little hearing along the way as well...When you play a Herbert and an Einstein together into 4 cabinets, something's gotta give...In looking at nbarts settings, it looks like he might play a little louder than me or the VH4 master volumes are set up different than the Herbert and Einstein..If I were to play either of those with the channels volumes at noon and the master too much past 9:00-10:00, it would be pretty freakin' loud...

As a reference Herbert with master 11:00-11:30 & volume 10-11:00-ish is pretty much the same loud as the VH4 is at the settings I have above.
