I've got a Diezel Einstein Combo that I want to re-tube with stock tubes. I saw Peter's tubes recommendations in one forum topic but they vary from what I have in my Amp (I didn't replace them and nought the amp new a year back):

Preamp:
- TAD 7025 (B) HighGrade
- Ruby 7025SS/ 12AX7A Selected HG+
- 4 x Ruby 7025 SS/ 12 AX7A
- 12 AT7 China

And in the amp section:
-2 Ruby EL34BSTR instead of the EL34BHT Peter recommended

What should I go for? Exactly the same as above?

why dont you trade me your Einstein combo for my Suhr modded Marshall and then you wont have to worry about it

Thanks but it took me years to find an amp with the right tone....gonna stick to it ;)

Peter makes tube changes when the supply either dwindles and the newer batches from the same company fall short of his expectations, or start having reliability problems, or when a better sounding tube in good supply with good tone and a good track history comes up at a reasonable price.

Most builders need to do this unless they have a really huge quantity of working tubes with no reliability problems already.

I have an Einstein combo and I know my tubes are different from yours. Mine is three years old.

You might wish to email Peter and see if the tubes reccomended on the site are still available, and if he still prefers them to others.

I elected to buy a batch of tubes to try out, but mostly along the lines of what Peter recommended in an earlier topic and what I have in my existing amp. I was quite satisfied with the distortion. So I got :

- 1 x TAD 7025 (B) HighGrade
- 2x Ruby 12AX7A Selected HG+
- 4 x Ruby 12 AX7A
- 1 x 12AT7 China
- 2 Ruby EL34BSTR + 2 Ruby EL34BHT

I will try the TAD then the Ruby 12AX7A HG+ in V1, then try to swap the EL34 BSTR and EL34BHT and see my preference.

I changed the tubes on my Einstein Combo. I used 2x Ruby 12AX7A Selected HG+, 4 x Ruby 12 AX7A, 1 x 12AT7 China in preamp section and the EL34BHT in the amp section.

The only differences to my original configuration are the TAD 7025 (B) HighGrade that I couldn't find and the EL34BSTR which I replaced by the recommended EL34BHT.

I find the distortion to be a bit less aggressive than before, and I somewhat prefers the heavy distortion I had before. Is it because I didn't put the TAD 7025 or because of the EL34BSTR ?

thanks.

Try a NOS GE/Philips 12ax7wa in the first position. makes a huge difference to me....they are vailable thru various sources including Doug's Tubes and others. The recommended tubes sound flat and lifeless in comparison...especially in that first position. Plus out of 5 new tubes 2 of them make hissing and other noises. Honestly not that impressed with the Ruby's selects IMHO...if all you're after is smooth huge gain I guess they are OK since being somewhat flat they do keep the heavy distortion smoother and compressed but I like a more open sound myself.
