I have had trouble getting a tone I like out of Herbert ch.3 as there is just too much compression and high end sizzle. If I were to replace the v3 preamp tube with a 12at7 would that lower the gain and reduce compression some?

Turn down the gain? When I had my Herbert I used Channel 3 for rhythms and Channel 2 for leads.

+1 Turn down the gain. I play tech death and on channel 3 I have the gain below 12oclock. Watch the presence knob, and what are you doing with the mid cut? Got it on or off? And if you have it on what settings you using?

Yep, as stated, lower gain and presence. Try different settings with treble and presence (lower another and increase another).

+ Some other areas to consider:
At what volumes you play (bedroom Vs. with band)? How are your Ch & Master volumes set. Extremely damped power amps tend to sound overly fizzy.
Which cab/speakers you use? Have you tried another one preferably with other speakers and did it make any difference?
Which pickups you use in your guitar? Is the over-compression also present with every guitar or only with certain one with high output pickup(s)?

And in case you have an older revision Herbert there might be possibility to reduce the compression and fizz by updating the guts a bit. But for this you must contact Master himself.

Mine, which is from 2007, visited papa's hut some two weeks ago due to repair work and he did the modification for mine. I do not notice that huge difference, but cannot make any A/B -testing anymore. According to the description of Peter himself: "The amp has less compression of presence in the distortion channels and the clean channel has more mids. No more sterile character". Personally I was never dissapointed on the sounds at first place though, but this update is by all means welcome as I trust in his tonal taste. Clean channel I do recognize is better.
