Hey guys, question on VH4's Channel 1. Ive been playing around with the volume on channel 1, and it seems like it never really gets that much louder when I crank the channel's volume. I have the gain around 10-11 o'clock and if I run the volume high up, it almost seems as if it peeks when the volume is at 12 o'clock, anything after that, no real difference, my master volume is at about 11, so my question is do you think its the pickups in my guitar? I use PRS guitars with the stock Bass & Vintage pickups and a Mesa 4x12 cab. I know some of you guys told me to switch the cab to a mills or Diezel cab, and I might be doing that soon if I can free up some cash, it just seems as if Channel 1 on the VH4 is incredibly compressed. I heard some clips with other guys playing channel 1, with different guitars than mine, but it seemed as if their volume was much louder than mine, and I really doubt they have the master volume all the way up.
I know when I tried the Herbert's clean, is way way better than the VH4s clean IMO, and louder, but I stuck with the VH4 because I liked its bottom end distortion.
One other thing is it seems as if my clean channel is muddy, and if I strum something pretty hard on the clean channel, it gets very distorted, so obviously I put the gain lower, but its never really "super clean" which leads me to think its the pickups.
Wonder ehat you guys think.
Thanks

Pickups, power tubes and speakers all make an impact on Channel 1. What you describe regarding the Channel
Volume sounds normal to me. The gain channels are much louder.

Hi Mark !

It´s really possible that Your pickup distorts
the input of the first preamp tube. Of course
we can mod Your amp to get Your clean channel louder
against the distortion channels.

Please send me an email with the serial number
of Your amp to peterdiezel (at) diezelamplification (dot) com.

Are Your tubes ok ? Do You have the right bias adjustment ?

It is possible to lower the sensivity of the input tube,
but this will affect all channels.

Peter

I've noticed something similar with my VH4. The interaction between the gain and channel volume controls is strange. If the gain is lower than the channel volume, the signal clips (distorts) if I strum hard. If the gain is higher, no clipping. I need to have both set to at least noon to keep the clean channel from distorting when I strum hard. But, I have no problem getting the clean channel to sound just as loud as the other channels. Only the clipping part.

I use a PRS with #7 pickups, a Gibson Les Paul with stock neck pickup and a Duncan JB in the bridge, and a Jackson with EMG 81/85. The clean channel clips with all three guitars.

Hey everyone, thanks a lot for the info. FourT6: What you described is exactly what I have with channel 1, if the gain is low and volume higher, my sound distorts and the clean channel really isnt clean at all, sounds a bit like channel 2.

Peter: I will send you an email shortly, and thanks about the info for channel 1, I didnt know there was a mod available to increase its volume.

Thanks again for the great advice everyone

Yeah the clean channel is clean, but breaks up quite easily. Very annoying.

My dream amp would be two channels: Vox AC30 cleans and VH4 Channel 3. Oh man, that would be so sweet.

I put my gain at 4 and volume for channel 1 turn almost all the way up. The clean comes out nice and clean. I use chorus, comp, and some reverb with my G Major and it sounds great.

I really do not think it is your cab. If your pickup is really hot it could cause it to distort but you have the gain turned up to 10 it will for sure.

I would set channel 1 gain at 4 and volume almost all the way up, then set your rythem channel a little lowder, then lead a little lowder then the rythem channel, then use the master volume to get the desired overall volume.

Hope this helps

By 4 you mean like 11:00?

Hey FourT6: Ya I agree with what you're saying, or have the Herbert's clean channel and still have channel 3 of the VH4 on the same amp :)

Hey Nat: I actually tried what you said, and it still makes my clean channel sound grungy and somewhat like the Crunch channel (channel 2)
I think it just might be the pickups like you said, I actually have the gain around what you said, around 11 and the volume all the way up, but after the volume goes past 12, it doesnt get any louder. What kind of guitar are you using, and which pickups as well?
Also just to let you know I se the Boss Super Chorus and RedWitch Emperess Chorus in Channel 1's Insert.
Thanks
