Diezel vh4 or herbert

It also depends on which era of Metallica you're asking about.

The earliest albums were recorded with JCM800s (I believe).
Later on, they moved on to Mesa Mark IIc+s...a Mark III would be a good approximation and not too hard to find.
On Load/Reload, I've heard that there was a lot of Rectifier.
On the newest records, there is a lot of VH-4
Live, it's a combination of VH-4 and Triaxis

So...take your pick.

never tried a Herbie but i'm still in love with my VH4.awesome amp
and i play Metallica night and day

As much as I LOOOOVE my VH4, and even though Hetfield's been playing a VH4 for the last 8 years or so, THE metallica tone is a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ (the Mark III and the Mark IV will get you there easily).

Even today James uses the VH4 and for us that know the Vh4 sound by heart, can hear it quite present, he is still blending the VH4 with the Mark IIC+ (triaxis modified to achieve James' old Mark IIC+)

Having owned and compared them both recently, my vote is for the VH4

I'm pairing it with a Mark IV, and getting a very Hetfieldesque tone.

Has anyone heard the new Mark V? Does it still have the Mark IV feeling?!

Well I play my 'tallica stuff with my herbert on CH2+
and it sounds great!!! depending on the era you should add mid-cut, i.e. sad but true is a mid-cut monster.
Sadly, I don't have a VH4 to compare but I think that the Herbert comes close enough.

The sound on Death Magnetic has been discussed here before and if you watch the making-of videos that jaymz uses
a LOT of amps...mostly even krank amps.

Cheers

I agree with the first part...Herbert does Metallica really well on Ch. 2.

The vids you're talking about are mainly from HQ, not the recording studio afaik, but yeah, James and Kirk have major amounts of amps.

dont want to kill it - i'm just asking myself right now: why would you want James' tone? or genreally somebody elses? isnt one of the greatest things to have his OWN tone?

at least for me, it is.

exactly BUT kewl if you just flick some switches and play along to 'tallica stuff
and then flick more switches and play to tool...herbert is so dynamic that
I can adapt my sound very easy for playalongs...

Aside from that, I also suggest everyone to find their own tone

same here man..... sometimes (and I don't mean to offend anyone) it gets a bit rediculous.....people buying VH4 + JC120, and modding adding every metallica guitar to their arsenal....it's a bit silly.....

but then again not everyone is after "their own sound"

I don't want my own sound, I want every sound. At the push of a button please.

VH4... I sold mine a while back and have regretted it everyday. Now I can't afford to buy another one and it totally sucks! I really miss channel 3
