was wondering which is the best for sounding like james hetfields tone? or would a mesa boogie triaxis be closer to his tone?

Well I play my 'tallica stuff with my herbert on CH2+
and it sounds great!!! depending on the era you should add mid-cut, i.e. sad but true is a mid-cut monster.
Sadly, I don't have a VH4 to compare but I think that the Herbert comes close enough.
The sound on Death Magnetic has been discussed here before and if you watch the making-of videos that jaymz uses
a LOT of amps...mostly even krank amps.
