I'm considering selling a bunch of gear to fund a VH4 purchase, and I'm trying to figure out what I would keep/sell to fund this.

I'm thinking I need a closed back cab I will have have spent most of my cash on the head so I'm looking for a cost effective but nice cab/speaker suggestions. The eminence governor looks like a possibility speaker wise, what are the thoughts on that speaker with the VH4? I'm looking to get a 1x12 or 2x12 only.

I'm mostly a home player, and I wondering how good is the volume control on the amp? Right now I run to load and re-amp to get the most out my non master amps. Just wondering If I should factor in a similar scheme for the VH4.

I have a musicomlab III (but not the plus). I have very little midi experience. Does anybody know if I can use it to switch the channels on the VH4?

Thanks in advance - John

Mesa traditional straight cab with V30s (not the over sized) the best match for the VH4 ever. don't even look behind ya.

- What is the diffrence between Plus and Non-plus versions? I have no personal experience on this pedal, but as at least the Plus version is able to send MIDI Program Change (PC) messages it will work. You will just need to program it and your amp - which is not difficult after you understand the logic.

I have tried numerous different speakers during the years and always ended up coming back to Celestion V30s. I have a Mesa Recto 2x12" at home with Herbert and that sounds OK, but definitely looses the battle to the Port City Amplification 2x12" OS -cabs I use for my main setup.

Volume control is very good for a powerful tube amp. Of course you loose a bit when you need to tame your amp to quiet levels, but no problem in using Diezels at home at all.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and information guys.

So far 2 votes for celestion V30s and Mesa cabs.

Volume control sounds like it will not be an issue.

Channel switching with the musicomlab looks good too. I just reviewed the manual for my version and it supports the PC messages. I haven't read up on the plus version, but the thing I see additional is that supports midi in.

Thanks John

I have a 412 Diezel cab and it sounds better than a Mesa IMO, but I only heard a Rectifier cab (oversized).

The over sized Mesa cabs they suck  I'm talking about the traditional cab. I have tried lot of cabs with the vh4 but the Mesa traditional straight cab is the way to go. The best match ever with the Vh4 and the über as well.

I had a 4x12" OS Mesa Recto cab (V30s) when I got my VH4, but sold it really quickly as it just did not work for for me with VH4. Very good construction on that cab, but sound was way too boomy with down-tuned guitars. Then I went with 2x12" Rivera which was fantastic cab. Unfortunately, I was not able to find another one here in Finland so had to get something else to pairt it with. I got a VHT Fat bottom 2x12" with P50E speakers. That was OK cab, but being front loaded and very aggressive sounding it just was not exactly what I was looking for. Then I got a two Port City Amplification 2x12" OS cabs with V30s and they have been there since. Love them, but the downside is that they are very big for being 2x12" - Esp. as I put them to live-in road cases - so there would not be big difference in comparison to space and weight to 4x12" cab. But the tone is excellent. One thing to keep in mind is that these Port City Amplification cabs are also ported (as name suggests). Note, Im not recommending any cab here, just telling my experience.

The Musicom Lab controller should work just fine if it sends PCs. Let us know if you need help in programming it. VH4 is one of the easiest things to program, but sometimes there are user issues with programming due to MIDI-channels, etc. All have always been solved though, so no worries.

I agree with you about the Recto. But the traditional Mesa cab is totally different sounding. tight as shit focus and in front of your face. It has nothing to do with the Recto. Trust me :) I have tried so many cabs.

Volume control works very well; I don't think you'll want to reamp the VH4 just for low volume playing.

If you only want a 2x12 (and not a 4x12), the Recto 2x12 is a reasonably nice cab and can usually be found for pretty cheap on craigslist. I adore every Bogner cab I've played, so I'd recommend that to you, too, but 1) they're much more expensive on the used market than the Recto and 2) they weigh damn near what a 4x12 weighs, so I'd just buy a 4x12.

No clue about the musicom thingy.

I own a Bogner über cab 16 ohms with X patt. It's a great cab that's for sure however, the traditional Mesa 4 12 cab is much better. can't compare.

That is exactly what I use as a cab for my VH4, and couldn't agree more! I actually just posted a video on the Rig Talk board from a gig over the weekend if you want an example of it. First video is Ch.3, the 2nd is Ch.2 with a BYOC OD2 overdrive.

I have thehoffs VH4 incoming. So I will soon be getting some VH4 time. Woohoo! I still need to get a cab. After our discussion here I'm looking at the mesa 2x12 closed back with v30s as the ideal cost effective solution. looks like I should be able to grab a used one for some where around $450. I'm also considering some used options on the gearpage. Someone has a CAA 1x12 ported cab w/red fang, and another person is selling 2 closed sourmash 1x12s w/v30s.
The ported cabs are supposed to sound good, but I'm not sure about the red fang. The sourmash cabs have the right speaker, but they are not ported. And I have never heard of the manufacturer, whats the consensus on his work and those cab?. I like the idea of the ported cab but have no real life experience with it? thoughts? I also like the idea of 2 1x12s so I can just leave one unplugged to keep the volume down. So I'm looking for input on the used options, or alternate solutions. Or should I just be patient and wait to score a used mesa 2x12. There is a used one on evilbay now.

Maybe you suck

I love my mesa oversized cabs with all the Diezels i've owned

Hey, believe it or not the traditional avatar 2x12s sound awesome with the VH4! Always go with a matching diezel FL 4x12 or 2x12 if you want the best though.

A big Thank you to theHoff, for a deal gone good. I am now part of the VH4 club. My Initial thoughts? It sounds freaking AMAZING, and has phenomenal versatility. LOVE IT.

No doubt Channel 3 is the signature Diezel sound. However The cleaner channels are excellent too. Channel 4 ...sweet G-Bus.

I recently picked up a CAA Ported 1x12 to use with it. I think it looks strange sitting on top of the tiny cab. Plus another speaker will just make it sound even fuller. Anybody got a CAA 1x12 to part with?

What mic(s) are you guys recording with? I was thinking of grabbing a audix i5 or an sm57. Any other recommended?
