Hey everyone,

I've got some serious problems with my VH4S. right now my main signal path is PRS singlecut -> Ibanez tube screamer -> VH4 -> Diezel 4x12 rear loaded cab. G-Major 2 in the loop. i've got EL-34's in the amp.

The amp sounds sooo dark, that in order to get an eq structure similar to a Marshall with a flat eq, i have the Diezel(on both channels 3 and 4) bass at 0, mids at 12 oclock, and treble all the way up. Deep at about 9 o clock and presence all the way up. On the ts-9, i have the Tone all the way up too. It seems that at these settings the tone should be ear piercingly trebly, but it sounds kinda flat. If I ever don't have the treble and presence all the way up, the amp sounds like it's in a closet. The only reason I have the ts-9 in the chain is to bring out some more presence and make the gain a bit more liquidy.

Does anybody on here have any idea why the tone would be so dark?

Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks!

Try everything raw 1st, no tube screamer or anything through the FX loop.

Then try a different cab, head still raw.

Has this been the situation always or has there been a change?
In other words, was the amp brighter/less-dark before?
...or is this the very first time you have used this amp?

I've tried it raw - there's definitely not as much gain/harmonics/brightness as some of you guys have posted in your sound clips. I've had the head for about 2 years, and it's always been a bit dark - on channels 3&4 I've had to keep the treble on 10 and bass at 0-3 since day one. If i put all of the knobs at noon, it sounds like my guitar's on the neck pickup and there's a blanket over the speakers. I guess it may have gotten worse, but i'm currently in the studio so everything is much more noticeable. But I basically have to run 2 amps to get any decent tone - been using a jcm2000 with it to bring out some more brightness and bite. At this point, the dual rectifier and the Marshall are sounding better than the vh4, which is crazy.

And yes I've tried different cabinets - I've also got a dieZel 2x12 with splawn speakers, and I've run it through a Marshall 4x12 as well.

call peter diezel or email (peterdiezel (at) diezelamplification (dot) com) him...this is the best way. usually it's bad tubes or something else that can easily be replaced. he usually is "super quick".

these settings are quite unusual...depends on the personal taste... but you should get a good sound even with all pots to middle (12 o'clock).

is the cabinet in phase? just asking...

i have a V30/G12K100 X FL Cabinet...it cuts my head off @ all things @ Noon. IDK. Interesting!!

Hi,

I have two original PRS Singlecuts and recently I had the pleasure to play with a VH4S.
I used my trusted 2X12 cab with played in V30's.

Although I like to have a dark sound it was possible to add a lot of highs.
The Singlecut isn't a very bright sounding guitar.
To have a bit more gain and low I installed a BKP Black Dog in one of my SC's.
That sounded really great with the VH4S.

Have you tried your VH4 with other guitars?
Perhaps it's this particular combination of the VH4 and Singlecut you don't like.

I doubt it's the guitar. I have a PRS Singlecut and it sounds just fine with my VH4 and Mesa 2x12.
