Im going to be selling my current 40 watt tube amp to cover the cost of my herbert but i was wondering if id be able to play this inside my house. Can you still get amazing tone at pretty low volumes? thanks.

Eddie

Yes and no...

You can get a pretty good sound while having the master turned down BUT there is a point of volume where the amp comes to life and that could be too much, dependig on what you´d call loud :D

About 9 or 10 o'clock on the master with the channel volume at noon. Sounds good at low volume, but get it to that point, and it REALLY thumps

The key to getting a good low volume tone out of the Diezel is to crank the master and use the channel volumes to control the overall sound level. That way you get a great cranked poweramp sound without the ear shattering volume. Unless you want the ear shattering volume of course.

Herbert get's it's distortion from the preamp stage, so it's no problem playing it at 8:30 to 9 on the channel vol and the same at the master. Yes, it sounds even better past 10, but I haven't heard any high gain amp sounding this good at low volumes.

I keep the Master Volume at about 12 o'clock and use the channel volume controls as individual master volumes, that way I'm able to get good tone out of my VH-4 at bedroom levels.

Bedroomlevel at 12? You must live in the woods with no one around you for miles...

He uses the channel volumes to adjust the overall volume ;) You shoud try this yourserlf, just for fun. At least with the VH4 the sound is different when using high master and low ch. volumes compared to the other way round.

like something the smashing pumpkins did with the jcm800s :)

master v. all the way up and gain as volume ;)

i try to raise boh channel and master volume to have the best :P.
depends on the sound i need to have

I understood that, but that's still way too loud to be considered bedroom level...

Of course it will but if you drop the channel volume to 8 o'clock you have a nice bedroom level ;)

Not on the Herbert...I just tried it, cos I'm at home sick this week, and there's no way in hell you can play like that at home. The most volume possible is 9:30 on ch. and 9 on master. If you go to 12 on master and 9 on ch. it's way too loud, and I play in the basement with thick concrete walls...

Well, than the VH4 and Herbert act different. I did it with my VH4 and it worked

Might be that the extra 80W make the difference.
