I bought a pretty nice In-Ear monitor rig a couple of years ago, tried them a few times and absolutely hated it. I actually liked them for vocals, however couldn't stand the way the guitar sounded as opposed to hearing my cabinet. I was wondering if any of you guy's have experienced the same thing and if so possibly figured out a way to get a decent guitar sound in them. I noticed that most of my old school heroes still don't use them either.

Thanks,

Yeah I read an interview with Big Mick (Metallica's looooooong time sound engineer) and he said the band switched to in-ears years ago but they STILL have a few cabs on stage (sometimes they're hidden) and he still uses wedges. The feel of the guitar sound is somewhat hard to "feel" with only in-ears.

here's the excerpt from the interview

"Is the whole band on in-ears?
In-ears and wedges. Most bands, when you get in-ears, you get rid of the monitor speaker system. Metallica never get rid of anything, they just add. James’ statement was great: He said, “We need wedges.” I said, “why?” He goes, “for guitar feedback. I can’t hold the guitar up to my ear!”

We don’t really have much backline onstage, it’s all in isolation chambers, flight cases with the mics built in, and they’re parked in the back, on the trucks-the guitar sound. It doesn’t actually come from the stage, it comes from somewhere else. So we can’t go up to that because it’s sealed. There are a couple of cabinets onstage."

Sounds very nice with my Herbert.

What ear-buds are you using?

I currently have the LE Ultimate Ears & they're great for listening to my iPod, however I just can't stand them for monitoring. I've been thinking about maybe trying those traditional style headphones that Paul Gilbert is using but would rather stick with the in-ear buds if I can find a set that sound good.

I use Westone ES2's (Dual Drivers - molds). They sound pretty darn good with my Diezel, but only if I mic my G12H30 speaker. The V30's I have in the cab sound VERY sterile and harsh in the in-ears, and most of the time in the house as well, at least compared to the G12H30's.

Just my personal experience with them. Hope that helps

I hate in ears!!!!!

I feel separated from the rest of the band when using in ears. Its great from a soundman's perspective, and its nice to be able to make your own mix. We actually use avioms, but send them to floor wedges. I just love having to feel everything, not that it has to be blaring loud, but it is not natural having all of that band sound in your ears. for one, it lacks the power and stage presence, and I would even argue that it is potentially worse for your ears.

If I have to wear them, I try to use a good set up headphones. I have yet to invest in a good set of earpods.

Thanks for the info! I've researched the Westone stuff & they sound like maybe what I'm looking for. I'm also looking at the Rane MM42 to get a better handle on the EQ'ing. I don't know though. I just may be too old school for any of this stuff. :)

That's been pretty much my experience also. At least with wedges, when something goes haywire you can get the hell away from it!

I use some ear protection made of "Elacin" with 25db Filters. I use them everytime I play with a band or when I`m in a loud location. The sound ist good an you have the "feeling" 'cause you play your amp :D And even the loudest china-crash or snare does not hurt your ears
