I am currently trying to make up my mind between a vh4 , a mark 1 herbert and a mark 2 herbert .... I want alot of clarity for 7 strings or 8 if I deicide to . Whats the differences between the vh4 and herbert ? Also whats the difference between the mark 1 herbert and the mark 2 ?

the mid switch is why i got it to play 8 string.......vh4 does not have this feature b.......both amps are killer but i prefer herbert for darker metal....plus it sounds great with 6l6s too

Both are fine amps, but the Herbie will serve you better. The D-Moll will as well. It's a mini Herbie, pretty much, if you want to buy new.

although the VH4 has more clarity and is tighter, the Herbert has a more favorable voicing for tuning that low, imo.

I can hear some voices saying "Hagen, Hagen"

Honestly, if you can find any one of them (Herbert, Hagen, VH4) used for a cheap price then go for it. Otherwise you have to listen you yourself in order to decide. Probably Herbie and Hagen will fit you better.

There is no big difference between the Herb mk1 and mk2. The Herbert and VH4 differ quite a lot in many aspects and everyone describes them differently. To my ears the Herb has a harsher gain-structure reacts more direct and has a more modern voicing compared to the VH4. The D-moll is voiced and reacts similar to the Herbert, but has a more classic gain-structure (similar to the VH4). The Hagen sounds the most modern with a harsh, yet creamy distortion and reacting more direct then the VH4, but not as much as the Herb.

Concerning 7 or 8 string guitars all Diezel amps work great, with imo the Herbert being the best, giving you the most clarity.

Now this is just how I would describe certain tonal qualities and I bet there are enough who would describe there differently (e.g a lot of folks say the VH4 is more "direct" then the Herb).
I think it could help if you tell us which amps (not just Diezels) you have played already and what you liked or disliked about them. This can give us an idea of which aspects of an amps sound are important to you.

As much as my default opinion is VH-4 I honestly think for 7 and 8 string (8 string especially) the Herbert will serve you better here...

As far as v1 and v2 Herberts... I wouldn't even concern yourself with it very much, my second opinion is that if you are buying used, just buy the first one that comes up in your price range, don't concern yourself to much with the versions of the Herbert...

I agree with the "7 & 8 string -> Herbert" sentiment.

I also play 7 and 8-strings, and find the Herbert better suited for this. The VH4's really shines for standard tuning as well as less drastic detuning (ie Db - Eb).

If I were to go for another Herbert, it would be an earlier one with an external bias.

I am very intrigued by the d moll . I have heard that channel 2 can pull vh4 tones easy and that 2b with the mid cut can get sick herbert low tunings .

HAGEN all the way... Herbert is brutal. Hagen is Sick and takes the low end like a beast.
Dont rush dude... Try them all before you buy!!! I have a Hagen and I am loving it. The next one on the list is definetely a Diezel Herbert...
Hagen might be a bit fizzy at low volumes but once you turn the channel volume up it transforms into a Beast. Unbelievably heavy!!!

I am so confused !!!!!! Diezel , rhodes , dar , or fortin ...... Ahhhh what to buy .. I am going to be trying out a rhodes colossus , hagen and herbert thursday .

I would narrow it down to Diezel and Rhodes.
Please do your research and read a bit more about Dar before even trying one.

If you use a 7 string I dont see why you havent bought a Hagen already. :)

From what I read and hear dars a sick amps but the guys not the best person to deal with .... I am definitely looking forward to trying out the hagen herbert and colossus thursday I should be able to make my mind up for sure.

I've never used a 7 or 8 string on any of my Diezels. But I have to agree that the Herbert seemed to sound better on songs I tuned down pretty low. If thats all your going to be doing i'd probably say Herbert.

Fortin is out of the picture as a standalone manufacturer. He's now with Randall.

DAR has got it's "aspects" that need to be understood before delving in. Interestingly enough, one member here waiting forever to get his, and when he finally got it, it was in the classifieds the following week. Just an observation.

Diezel is awesome.

Rhodes is awesome.

Good luck!

Yeah I was kinda hoping to get natas used but evidently theres only a few out there . I found a guy that has fbm that may be willing to move it . But I have heard so many demos of the herbert that I am really leaning towards it .

I got a herbert and love it ..only bad thing about a herbert is tryn to settle on eq settings...no matter where u have them it sounds great..seriously you have to "try" to make it sound bad lol.. things a beast..caution though make sure u have a proper cab to handle the low end of the herbie :)
