I am going to be getting a backup set of tubes for my 1960 Fender Brown Super. The amp came with groove tubes 6L6B. The schematic for the circuit I have says 6L6GC and the circuit that came later says 5881's.

Is there any difference between the 6L6B, 5881, and 6L6GC's?

Not sure about the 6L6B's, but the 5881's should be a little sharper, and more mechanical sounding than the 6L6GC's. The 6L6GC's should have a little more rounded bottom end, and have a softer edge to them. Would proceed according to the type of music your playing. I did not think 5881's and 6L6's were interchangable, Anyone else?? - Jim

I seem to remember 5881's and 6L6's as being interchangeable. I also think 5881's have less pronounced highs and more rugged, military spec construction.
