hey all,

first post. as an extremely happy mod50 owner, mainly playing smaller gigs, improv, fusion, jazz stuff, i recently got a permanent heavy metal gig (anything that makes me look younger).

well, i obviously need a 4x12 and since i want to look cool, it would be nice if it matched my mod50. the us eggie cabs will cost me millions to bring to europe, and the tourmaster 4x12 seems like an interesting alternative. especially since the tourmaster series has several dealers around here and i might be able to get a good price.

now, i haven't heard many opinoins on the tourmaster 4x12, and the ones i've heard says that it's a pretty loose sounding cab. i definitely need a tight sounding cab, since it's main purpose is bringing out earth shaking palm mutes ;-) it will be my hard rock cab, and a tight low end is crucial.

any thouhts or experiences.

and jeff, what are the actual differences between the two 4x12? sonically, construction wise, etc.

thanks.

.

Dimensions of the tourmaster cabs is different. They do not have our patent pending "Tone Bra" installed on them. They are a bit looser on the low end but if you know how to tune your amps low end correctly the cab will loose it. Great alternative over the pond for a matching cabinet. Don't know if I really helped but go play one and see if it works!

Do they both use v30's?

Yes, Tourmaster does not have the "tone Bra" installed like our MOD cabs. Makes your V30's sound like they are 25 years old.

have you ever considered using a pair of 2x12 cabs? it may not look as cool but it will give you a tighter bottom end IMO.

I second that! I use my Avatar 2x12 for gigs and some recording. For my heaviest recordings I still use my Marshall Mode 4 (oversized cab) with celestion G12t75s that I put it in it (pre-chinese celestions).

I just gig w/ a 2x12 and it sounds massive man!

thanks guys for input and advice.

oh yes, there are big sounding and gig friendly os 2x12 cabs. but that's not what i'm after here. we're two guitar players. the other guy playing through two 4x12 cabs and a cranked engl. loud double bass drummer and really big bass rig. some of the venues/stages are big as well ...

i have a small/medium rig covered, and that rig works at most gigs, even bigger hard rock gigs. but this is different. more racer x type stuff. and i need to keep up with the other guitar player. i also want to look cool ;-)

there are 2x12 cabs that are really tight in the bass (the caa or bogner os for instance), but nothing really moves air like a 4x12.

i will probably use a full stack when possible :D

so any more experiences with the tourmaster 4x12?

Eric, did you actually just say "Mode 4"? I think my eyes just started bleeding uncontrollably.

Yep I did. I actually like that cab. Its oversized, and I have thrown away the original speakers that came w/ it, rewired to be mono / stereo, and treated the inside some to make it punchy as hell. Put an older set of Celestion G12T75s that I had in it, and it sounds awesome. Much more low end than normal Marshall cabs. Helps that it is about 3 inches taller than normal 1960 cabs.

Nope...no misprint. Its been my main 4x12 for about 2 years now. Out of the gate, it did sound like sh!t, but a good well made cab doesn't have to sound bad with good speakers in it ;). Its been played / gigged on a lot. And I love the tone!!!

Its been replaced now w/ my Avatar Speakers 2x12 w/ Warehouse Vintage 30's for gigging now, but I still mainly use my Marshall for recording my heavier stuff. The lighter stuff either gets recorded w/ my Avatar closed back w/ WHS Vintage 30's or my Avatar Open back 2x12 w/ Alnico Blues.

I have the 4X12 GC slant cab.

I originally bought a marshall vintage 4X12 / greenbacks that sounded great with a marshall jcm 2000 dsl 50 head in the store against a mesa 4X12 vintage 30's. then I got a gc egnater 4X12 and once i put my mod50 on them and compared both cabs I was shocked at how bad the marshall sounded. back to gc went the marshal head and cab.

I have the sl2 and t/d modules and there is a good balance between the eggie cab reproducing nice cleans, breakup and low end chugga etc. the cab sounds like a recording, smooth no ice picks, and with many guitars etc.

Yes it does some nice palm muted low end stuff with the right guitar, pickups, sl2 settings etc. in other words when you dial it in you can feel it and its there and will make you smile. however, it may or may not be enough for you because i,m not a heavy metal expert. for sure, the cab wont wimp out on you.

I just ordered the straight cab, so I can stackem

I hope that helps you

thanks a lot. that's really helpful.

now, the question is slanted or straight? i've never really understood why one would put a slanted cab on top of a straight. the top cones of the slanted cab will project the sound above your head

a stack should be to straight cabs imo, while a single 4x12 slanted. even a slanted cab BELOW a stragiht cab on top of it makes more sense in a stack.

thanks again.

I've always thought that myself.

First off the effect of the angled top cabinet is to combat the effect of gravity on sound, a soundwave moving in the same axis as a flat surface (ground, tile, wood) will reflect up the sound wave into. Depending on the frequency it can negate the initial soundwave. Additionally it will deaden the forward movement of the wave.

As to the Egnater US built 412, I played through one at the Egnater seminar and will say it is one of the best sounding 412's I have ever played. To put it bluntly, it rattled my balls just being in the same room with it while playing through it.

I think their sound room has some kind of mojo though.

I can't get anything to sound as good at home as it sounded in that tiny little room. :D
