Do you guys have a preference for different brands of preamp tubes in different slots. If so, which ones in which slots and why?

allmost allways use deferent brands in deferent slots.

i like Sovtek, but too many of them get fizzy. like Tung-sol, but again too many of them do something i don't like?

think a lot of times i end up with a Sovtek in V1, Tung-sol in V2, and JJ in V3.

So how do you determine which tube for which slot...mix to desired taste?

I have different brands in my preamp.

V1, preamp input spot = JJ ECC83s. (very lively, clear and low noise)
V2, gain for crunch and ultra channels = Mesa brand ECC83 (used have EH brand, but this tube tamed the harsh edge the gain had and smoothed it out as well)
V3, preamp output tube and power for active eq = JJ ECC83s (again, low noise and makes the gain channels eq sections very responsive and lively)
V4, phase inverter = Sovtek LPS 12AX7 (low noise, balanced tube)

My amp came stock with EH 12AX7's and I've also tried Tungsols which were noisey in my amp. I have a gold pin EH 12AX7 that I've yet tried.

guess trying one tube at a time in the V1 is the best way to get a feel for how the tubes are voiced.

i just kindda seem to like the overall voicing of most Sovteks, so usually have them in V1, because on most amps V1 affects tone the most.

kindda started doing the VHT thing and running a Sovtek WB in the V1, it's a little lower gain but still has the basic sound to it.

I always swap a JJ ECC83S into V1 after the initial run-through with a new amp or preamp.

somehow, it always improves the amp tonally, and smooths it out.

Love those.
