Dimarzio fs-1 or any type of hot p-90ish single coil?

I'm wanting to soup up a strat but dont' want to go the humbucker route. I know the FS-1 has the high output but wanted to know if anyone else has had experience using the p/u. It's relatively cheap but wanted to know what other options you guys have used.

I gather the quarter pounder from Seymour Duncan has a p90 vibe but I've never heard or played a guitar w/ one.

Again it'll be in a strat for the purpose of playing raunchy surf music.

SK Guitar Specialties S90.

I have one in my Les Paul (technically, I have Dual Tone II, but 1 coil of it is a S90, so when it's split I'm using just the S90 coil), and they are killer. However, they always have some squawk and crunch going on when you play mezzo-forte to fortissimo. You can pick lightly and it cleans up a little more, but they've just got too much guts to be pristine clean.
 
The FS-1 is great, one of my favorite pickups. I had it in the neck of my Strat with a Fast Track 2 in the bridge. Killer Hard Rock tone. Its definitely hotter than a regular single coil but not too much. Great pickup, i recommend it. :thumbsup:
 
BTW, I can say with experience they work well with the T-Verb.

Bryan Gunsher at BG Pickups has single coils sized p90's that sound good. IMHO more like a hot and spicy single than a classic p90, but good sounding.
 
For thick singlecoil sounds from the bridge position I prefer the DiMarzio Virtual Solo. Somewhere in between a hot single and a P90, tone-wise... and actually works great for both high gain and semi-traditional clean tones.
 
If your looking for cheap, then check out the dimarzio SDS-1. It's one of their least expensive pickups, has good fat mids, and is fairly loud for a single. BTW, the only reason I still have one of these, is because I got it in high school, when I had less than no money, and just never got rid of it. Works well in the bridge or middle pos, bit way too warm for the neck.

That's pretty cool! Hand wound and incredibly cheap! Thx!

One thing that's come up from my buddies shop is putting a jazzmaster p/u in the bridge (originally it has a HB slot in the bridge.) Anyone try this before?

I just put two in one of my guitars and I love them.
Thinking of getting another. They say for bridge but work great in the neck and middle too.

Another vote for the SDS-1. One of my strats has one in the neck & middle position, great bang for the buck pick up.
 
The SDS-1 does sound interesting. Has anyone put one in the bridge though?

I'm glad that I don't absolutely have to get the guitar working now, because now I'm stuck between 3 different pickups. The best part of it all is the fact that all 3 are incredibly cheap!
 
In an odd twist of fate. I went to my buddies store in Jefferson City and he actually had a non staggered Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in stock. So that's what I decided to go for. Unfortunately I didn't have time to put the p/u in, but as soon as I do I'll hopefully post goods news about it!

Thanks for making my decisions harder though! I wouldn't have thought to look at the SDS1. If the Quarter Pounder doesn't do it for me, I'll probably be hitting that one up!
 
The quarter pounder is a another good choice, I loved it in my old Blackmore Strat, if they are good enough for Mr Blackmore, tis good enough for me. :)
 
It at least is advertised to sound like a p90. So that's good enough for me! Consider me swayed by ads.
