Hey dudes, I've been thinking about this for the guitar I'm working on.. Any idea on how to make it work DIY? I was thinking about getting threaded inserts and putting it in the pickup route or what not..

Anyone with direct mount pickups have tips or pics to chime in with?

I've had a few EBMM's with direct-mount pickups. I think it looks better than pickup rings on some guitars. I'm skeptical of any tone benefit. The EBMM's don't use threaded inserts, just wood screws. The problem of course is that it complicates height adjustment. If you route them too shallow, you can't go any lower without more routing. If you route them too deep, you have to use foam or springs if the pickups need to be raised, negating any supposed tonal benefit of direct mounting.

Ah shit, I forgot about height adjustment..  I think I have to add little blocks of wood into the route where the screws would go so I can have something to mount em on

If the pickup is directly mounted to the body, the pickup vibrates with the body which means it would cancel some of the tone, right?

The lack of easy adjustment and the DRILLING OF THE PICKUP BASEPLATE :gethim: pisses me off TOO MUCH.

I HATE direct mount pickups.

I FUCKING HATE DIRECT MOUNT PICKUPS!!!!!!!!!!!

try both ways in one guitar. You just might find you prefer the sound of a suspended pickup to a direct mounted pickup.

UGHHHH, I hate when:
the hole strips
The pickup won't go any lower
I have to fuck up the baseplate on the pickup
I then have to sell the pickup for a huge loss because of the non-threaded baseplate
It doesn't sound as good as a pickup ring.

If the pickup is independent of the vibrating body, its magnetic field will be more stationary, therefore, the sinewave of tone will look larger to the pickup. am I wrong????

I dunno exactly how that works, maybe the pickup could resonate off the vibrations through the guitar? Or maybe it'll be shitty I dunno.. I was thinking of using the screw mounts already on the pickup to direct mount it, here's a diagram of what I'm thinking of;

i'd say go over to Metro and ask the EVH guys. seems like Eddie had the whole pickup resting on wood?

I have a Warmoth body they routed for direct mounting a few years ago and they asked what PU I was using and then routed it for the actual PU I had (Gibson 500T) and it worked out great. Warmoth got it perfect the first time and I did not have to worry about height adjustments.

I have a kramer with direct mounted pickup and it sounds great

Direct pickups are a pain in the ass. I've had severall guitars with them. I can't hear the difference and changing pickups out is harder. For example, Dimarzios and Duncans have different height legs (at least they used to). This makes things very hard. Plus you have to ream out the holes on the pickups because they're threaded for metal screws.

I do like how it looks, but it's way too much of a pain IMO.

I use super dense foam strips under the pickup to give some height adjustment.
