DIY JCA20 aka Dave

Sounds really good! I definitely hear some things in the clip that remind me of the ccv I had. Can anyone here explain what makes this amp the best choice for this mod over other donor amps?

Amp does sound good but if I may ask one question - there’s like a ducking brigade attitude to the top end. Like the amp opens up on a chord then the top end compresses and squishes. Is that the camera compression or is that the amp? I can’t unhear it and it sounds odd?

Probably because you can buy one for like $300, it's affiliated with Soldano and has decent build quality, and the PCB traces are on the top which means it's easier to mod. Plus it's EL84 and 20 watts, so it's easier to get it cookin'.

Good points. It just makes me wonder what could be if other amps were used. I wonder how it would be if done to an actual SLO or Marshall's. Or for other lower priced EL84 amps a Laney LH20 and probably others I'm blanking on

I’m not sure I hear what you hear. But let me tell you. It sounds much better than any other EL84 amps I’ve ever tried.

Always loved the sound of that amp. When I go out gear hunting, I am always on the lookout for one in the wild.
