Do DI box's passive thru's affect tone?

I've been using my sansamp bass driver d1 as a DI box in my signal chain, having the guitar signal going through the thru and an xlr going to my interface. In the manual they state that the parallel thru leaves the tone unaffected but that is NOT the case. Top end is removed and buttons like mid / bass shift cause changes even if the pedal is off.

Thinking of getting a dedicated guitar DI after this because I like the convenience but I'm worried that I may run into the same issue. Signal chain is guitar > CAL buffer > DI thru > pedalboard > amp.

JHS mentions this can happen with any passive device. I thought of getting the buffered splitter to avoid this but I already have a buffer so idk if a passive splitter / DI will suffice... any thoughts?
