If I can hear the difference through a cell phone speaker, then I'd imagine in the room it would be a bit more apparent.

Every little piece of the rig totals up to your tone.

I'd imagine with an amp with a more straightforward circuit, you would hear it even more.

I know that just swapping between different tube manufacturers for the exact same output tubes can yield sonic differences as well.

With that much pre amp distortion, it's not going to make much difference.

And then you add all the effects and it doesn't matter at all.

Subtle differences. I thought the 6l6 was the blend because it sounded the most full to me, and the best. I liked the blend too, very tight sounding. I'd choose the el34's last, but again, so subtle. I'd like to see a test like this, but with different preamp tubes, or the same kind of preamp tubes, but different makes.

EL34's definitely sound different than 6L6's, without question.

What it comes down to is EL34's compress a bit more that 6L6's.

Which could be overcome with preamp and effects.

If you are going to play that processed, might as well go Kemper or something.

It’s not really a fair comparison as you only have one output transformer and one of the pairs are going to be mismatched and cause an undesirable tone. The only way to compare them is with changing output transformers as well in order to only have the tube be the dependent variable.

Yes, especially from brand to brand IMO.


You don't need anything fancy though, just find what you like. For Fender amps I like OEM Groove Tube Rebrands or OEM equivalent or Tung Sol Reissues.

For el84 amps or Vox amps Tung Sol Reissues or Chinese are the way to go but JJs aren't bad either IME.

I bought a Tverb in 1995/96 brand new and used it with the stock 6L6's for a year. Bought retube kit from Mesa with EL34's. It sounded different. Enough of a difference that I never put 6L6's back in it again.

I rolled a ton of power tube in my KSR Ares. They all sound different in the room but when using a single SM57 they are more similar recorded. The Ares is very sensitive to tube changes.
