Do you lend your equipment out to friends and family?

Just curious how everyone feels on the subject?

I have had some bad experiences lending gear to friends....amps come back broken, attenuator never returned, etc...

So I reluctantly will loan select gear to select people now.

Depends on how close of a friend, and what their situation is.

Generally I don't loan stuff out to friends who are homeless crack addicts or wildly rich, because those are the people that wont give you your shit back.

If you only loan out to friends who are responsible and respectful, you probably wont have issues.

If you mean "friends" as in other bands that are playing at gigs with you? I only loan out speaker cables, strings, and cords, because I know I'm never getting them back. If I let someone use an amp or cab I'm watching that shit like a hawk.

Sometimes i'll lend some stuff to my cousin to check out. He plays but is so far removed from the gear community that I know nothing is going to happen to it other than something accidental.

But even then, usually what we will do is trade some item short term.

I learned my lesson with other people. Fortunately I got my money back out of the situation, but it took a LONG time (like 10 years) and shortly after the "debt was cleared" the guy died, so our friendship didn't have much chance to get back to normal.

I've definitely loaned pedals before. Not guitars or amps. I probably would depending on the person and the circumstance.

ABSOLUTELY NEVER. Cuz I have no friends… just people I owe money too or owe me.

Well here is another question.. I have assorted gear that has been left at my house or practice spaces for literally over 20 years that the owners have never picked up, even after me reminding them every few years “dude your piece of gear is sitting here” which they never come get, at what point am I allowed to just claim ownership??

A friend of mine that was playing shows out quite regularly in town used to use a Bogner Alchemist. He had done soundcheck and all the day before so everything was set, but the amp was farting out on him so I let him borrow my Budda SD45 head, but I sat right there to the right of the stage so I could keep my eyes on my stuff and make sure none of his bandmates were bumping into it or being dicks and could damage it. I got in for free, got all kinds of free drinks as they thought I was part of the band, and then as soon as the show was over and they were breaking down, I went and got my car and then loaded up my amp and I went home. I'm not saying I didn't trust my friend, I just don't trust people at shows when the band is running back and forth breaking down and loading up their vehicles with gear.

I do it all the time with a select few friends. Hell I've probably given away $10k or more worth of gear.

Every time you play it.

As soon as they leave the property according to the law.
Last time I looked.
