Do you lend your equipment out to friends and family?

I have and would. Close long-time friends only, not general acquaintances. Even then, it depends on what they hope to accomplish. No horror stories to share, thankfully.

My friend asked to borrow a new Suhr I had. I said, “ok, bring it back soon.” He brings it back and I take it out and there is an ENORMOUS GOUGE in it and part of the maple top was missing!! He didn’t even mention it and when I called him he feigned surprise!! Karma has hit him hard over the past few years. He was even homeless for a short while. While all our friends said, “damn, that’s so sad, poor guy,” I secretly cheered his homelessness and hoped more hard times fell upon him. Every time I tried to emphasize the Suhr popped into my head and my rage and fury rapidly soared to the surface.

Didn’t learn my lesson though. So now, I will only loan out an amp / guitar to someone who I know for sure will treat it right. A couple forum members fall under that category. I just can’t help but to spread the joy of playing a killer amp or guitar.

(I didn’t secretly cheered the imbecile’s homelessness)

I generally don’t lend out anything I can’t afford to lose, or that would upset me to see broken.

However if I go to someone’s place and leave a piece of gear there on the understanding that they can use it as much as they want as long as it doesn’t leave the property until I come get it back, I’m cool with doing that because I’m not leaving my stuff at anybody’s place I don’t completely trust.
