Anyone else notice when switching to 6550's from EL34's or 6L6's that the whole head gives off a helluva lot more heat?? :scared: I just replaced and re-biased a VH4S.

My front grill is almost too hot to touch... This normal? Yes - they're biased to 100mA per pair (just shy of actually).

Lemme know...

I experienced the same with my Herbert after the 6550 retube. It gets so extremely hot, you could use it as a grill

I still have the EL34 and my room is starting to become like a sauna. (hopefuly not a gay sauna :emofag: :grim: )
Maybe I should take the amp outside on june 24th (it's like 4th of july for province of Quebec) for my BBQ

You can get some very cool (no pun) liquid cooling systems for PC's where the liquid coolant flouresces as it gets hot. Can we have that Peter? :D

To answer the question, my VH4 came with 6550's and yes it hurts to touch the front grill, never mind the back.

Ya, but why look like a Hughes & Kettner when we're, like, THAT much more inexplicably pimp

Thanks for the words - just making sure my VH4S Hibachi is doing the right thing. Gigs will now have grilled wieners as a bi-product. :2thumbsup:

Only open for new settings

I finally got around this morning to putting the SED 6550's in my VH4. Using the 6L6 setting I am getting 472 volts from the tranny. Biased them at about 46-47 each tube. I didn't think channel 3 could sound any better than it already did, but it went from WOW to HOLY SHIT :inlove::inlove:! Channel 4 finally will be usable for me as well, as the 6550's really brought it to life. No comment on 1 and 2.

Peter, this was definitely an excellent recommendation . Now, I better put me in an order for some 6550's for my inbound Herbert.

I don't have that Hibachi thing going on though. Let the amp sit in run for an hour to break the tubes in and make sure there were no duds. The front and rear grills are cool to the touch.

hey Steve, why the "no comment" on channels 1 and 2 ?

mind checking that out for me please?

I don't play anything on them. But, I did check them out just for you. Ch. 1 is still crystal clear. Loads of headroom there. Ch. 2 really has some good bluesy drive to it. Plugged a Strat in and it really is nice on the neck pick-up. Lots of thick, articulated drive, especially when controlled with pick attack. Very reminiscent of early ZZ Top sounds (from Tres Hombres) on Ch.2. Plugged in my Charvel which only has a Dimarzio SD in the bridge. Channel 2 with a really hot humbucker makes me want to play Whole Lotta Rosie, very much a cranked JMP/JCM sound with again, lots of body and character.

All in all, this is a very good tube change recommendation. Makes the best, even better!

I love Channel 2... AND Channel 1.

Hell, I love all four, but there's something sonically seductive about the break-up tones of Channel 2.

that's so true Terry. The Vh4 is the Diezel gem to me.

btw, what's your fav. Diezel? (and don't tell me 'all of them') seriously your numero 1

WOW.....that is tough. If you are talking about the versatile staple used for anything mono or stereo I have to say VH4 or VH4S. So much can be done with that amp in wet/dry situations, blended tones, etc. that it is a tough amp not to have IMO. I really really love the Einstein for many things however lately the Schmidt has all my time it seems (which is little..lol). The Schmidt is a stunning amp and has really opened me up to new things and got me trying new things so I have to give lil Schmidt props for that.

I guess it comes down to mood for some aspects but the main staple overall for me is the VH4/VH4S. Gotta have one around at all times because it does so much so well and is never afraid to stand alone on its own in addition to playing well with others in any context.
