i'm finding more and more that i like the sound of a single coil over a humbucker.
i have the neck and bridge 'buckers set to split, but i think its not really quite "there".
obviously the real answer is to get a single-coil guitar.
but i was wondering if anybody makes 2 side-by-side single coils in a HB-sized casing?

thanks for your help

edit: this is NOT a parody-thread of

this is a real question

A humbucker is two single coils next to eachother.

they're different construction. no?

Depends really. Some pickup designers like to use two asymmetrically wound coils to achieve different sounds, but to the opposite effect lots of pickups are identical coils placed opposite polarity.

On a side note, don't be afraid to go single coil. I went head first into singles a while ago and most times you would be hard pressed to know the difference between a single coil and a humbucker with lots of gain. Non-hum canceling singles just have a different tonal texture that humbuckers can't replicate.

Just go with any pup in 4 wire configuration and coil tap it

Go from bucker to SC with the tap of your tone or volume control (or other configurations that suit yer fancy).

SD has had the Stag Mag and The Mag, which are bridge and neck versions respectively; both are actual dual single coils.

Humbuckers are NOT constructed in the same fashion that single coils are. Singles have pole pieces that are the magnets also, whereas on humbuckers, the polepieces all make contact or are polarized by a bar magnet that runs under the coils. That is part of the reason that single coils sound different than tapped humbuckers. If you want authentic single coil sound from the tapped portion of a bucker, try the SD pickups I mentioned, or the Fralin Unbucker.

Good point sir. Some single coil pickups use bar magnets though, so its not quite cut and dried.

Yes the Stag Mag by Duncan as posted above is one- it just looks like two singles next to each other- so when split you've got true single coil with the tight magnetic field from the rod magnets- I had one of these in a BC Rich a long time ago.

Another one which is NOT two singles but made to be split is called the Unbucker by Fralin. This one when coil cut gives you a single coil at about 7K or so BUT when BOTH coils are on it's still like a PAF at about 10k or so- instead of the normal overwound 14K if each coil was 7K. So it's a clear Humbucker AND it's a full output single when coil cut, I imagine there's cool sounds in this or Fralin would not release it.

You can also use a Humbucker in Parallel THEN use a coil cut switch- so you will have single coil, AND a thinner clearer Humbucker sound in Parallel mode. The UNBUCKER might be really cool wired this way -

Some Humbuckers in Parallel mode are more like a P90 sound- not EXACTLY like a P90 of course. As I recall the Stag Mag in Parallel was also like a Fat very punchy single coil tone and of course in coil cut mode it IS a single.
