Hey guys,

I just got the luck of all luck and scored a reissue fish preamp!! I don't have a rack power amp to pair with it and have been using the return section of a mesa stiletto head. So far it sounds phenominal!

Is there ANY tips or hints for tweaking these preamps as to how the knobs interact with each other? Ex: use less bass than your eyes think you should have or little tidbits like that?

I am completely beside myself and floored... i used to own a xtc, uberschalls and even a shiva at one point all gone today and alone standing is a fish. Easily the best tones in my opinion!

Guys.. I am dreaming.. seriously someone just tell me i am dreaming..

It's all a dream, man...just send the Fish to me and you'll wake up back in your normal life with your old amps.

For real though, congrats on the Fish!

lol thanks,

My only "problem" is i cannot find a rackmount poweramp.. every store in my area does not have anything, used markets i see none.. this is crazy..

Funny you mention that.. i JUST got back from getting a mesa stereo 2:50 (newer version of the fifty:fifty i think). I am right about to go fire it up and make sure all is well.. i made a deal with a stiletto head i was trying to unload lately, got a gator case with the poweramp and a bit of cash for the trident. I am so stoked!!

wow, ok last night i had the fish and mesa stereo 2:50 dialed in very nicely! Just getting the hang of how the knob controls interact on each channel. Presence on the mesa poweramp is at noon, and i am finding the tones are really coming alive with strato and brown channels wow!! Initially i had every channel sounding great except (ironically) for the brown channel which is the flagship of this preamp. I personally have found the settings are counter active for strato and brown tweaking wise, for example, brown i can get away with treble at like 2-3 o clock with mids at 11 and bass at 11 while on strato that is WAY too bright and i get away with treble at 12:30ish, mids 11 and bass at 2-3o clock.

I wonder if others have found this sound wise or not? It's all subjective ofcourse depending on poweramp/guitar/cab/speakers used etc. I am using a bogner os 2x12 w/ v30s and a prs vintage mahogany mira.

Ok minor / mega update for those that care or are reading this thread :)

Picked up a VHT 2502 poweramp to pair up with the fish and OMFG what a difference it makes!! This is a newer vht 2502 with the options for level, voicing switches. I absolutely love this with voicing switch engaged in a/b mode! I cannot believe how much better this sounds than even the mesa stereo 50 with el34s!

The strato and brown channels have come alive and are easily my favs, each has its own thing going, strato is tighter and brighter for marshally rhythm tones and brown is just huge for leads. Vice versa would have a different thing going on too, brown is so friggin' huge sounding and strato has that searing violinish tone.

Good god, i really read up a lot about different poweramps etc and noticed most people recommending vht poweramps as "tops for poweramps" etc and didn't think it was true, well you can call me "convinced" now...

A bit of a ramble but needless to say here is a pic of the two happily together after..

Haha, yea i hear that... no pun intended of course. If i was to do video recordings of the fish i would want it to do the preamp/power amp combo justice to what it sounds like in the room. The last thing i wish to do is make it look/sound bad or not sound as good on vid as in person etc. :D

I have downloaded an AVS free video editor so i am inclined to start learning to make my own vids for whatever ideas come to mind... hmmm.. I suppose i could make a long video and edit it out for a Bogner fish vid going through each channel? I RARELY see anyone out there with many vids/clips of the fish let alone fish + Vht OTHER than the "legendary" Tone Merchants vid (which is VERY well done and i think does the fish justice).

P.S - Sorry for the coloured font for the fish i just had to match it to the ionized blue faceplate shade. LOL

Ok, I will be uploading a video of the fish and vht sometime today hopefully, it will be my first vid using vid editing so it will look a little bit better. Keep in mind the sound will be captured via a jvc camcorder so take it with a few grains of compression and youtube quality salt ;) I will post it as its own thread in hopes of people checking it out !
