I haven't seen much talk here about their new album. Anyone get it? I bought it Monday and been listening to it in my car. I think I've listened to it enough to know the songs. I thought I was done buying their albums but like an idiot I gave in and bought it due to glowing reviews all over YouTube. I just don't get them anymore. This album literally put me to sleep a few times in my car, does anyone remember when Dream Theater was a progressive metal band? What's surprising is that Petrucci wrote it all but it sounds catered to LaBrie and Rudess. Mellow ballad after ballad on this, anything heavy is few and far between, if at all! I like dynamics and all but come on, you guys are a rock band still right?

Labrie has been a guest singer on the Ayreon albums and as far as a double disc concept album if you want to hear it done right listen to The Theory Of Everything, or the Human Equation. Those albums have good song after another where 90% of this Dream Theater album to me sounds like a poor Disney Soundtrack.

Maybe it's just me but I would of rather of spent that 18 bucks on a few sets of strings!

I still like them, but in the case of the The Astonishing, the story/concept got in the way of the music. The parts I like the most are way too short, dropped quickly in order to move on to the next scene.

I agree with the above, I do like the Gift of Music song but a lot of it is just boring, I think they have gone downhill after the Six degrees album but annoyingly I still buy them.

Just listened to the whole thing. Disney soundtrack sums it up pretty well.

I stopped buying a long time ago.
Can't stand all the keyboards. Songs are repetitive. They lost the fire.

It is what it is. Yes, some parts are repetative, same music with different parts of the story. I listen to it at work so i cant really follow the story but i like it. It's definitely a different direction for them. Its practically a score for a broadway musical, which is what it may evolve into. Im not really saying anything that anyone hasn't heard about it.

I used to love these guys. I used to get all the CDs and I'd see them every time they'd come around. Now I'm pretty much done with them. When it comes to DT I can't just listen to just any schmoe giving a review. There are just too many fanboys who are too far up Petrucci's ass to be objective.

I'll wait until my brother gets it and tells me about it before I investigate it any further.

I agree. I LOVE Dream Theater, but this album is boring & excessively long for no reason. Lots of mini segway songs & too many soft ballad type songs.

I'll still go & see them live on this tour, but the album is a bit of a disappointment.

I was addicted to dt back in the day, but they started losing me slowly but surely after awake and change of seasons. It's to the point I can barely listen to any of their albums in their entirety. Now I pick and choose a song here and there, then move onto another band

A little OT, but for all you guys like me that really dig the old Dream Theater stuff, what other bands are you into?
Just looking for some new music..

I used to be a big fan, but Labrie has killed it for me.

Some of these fanboys are comparing this new album to The Wall and Operation Mindcrime!!!!! For fucks sake, what are they listening to????

when dream and day unite is the only listenable album this band has ever released IMO

The only Astonishing thing, is they have released 6 SHIT albums in a row now. What a waste of this caliber of talent.

Here's an album that's brings back some Operation Mindcrime mojo IMHO. These guys write some really good tunes, some modern production, and a bit of an 80's feel. Every album they have is worth buying. They're working on a new one.

The singer on that album left the band but lucky for them the bass has a decent voice.

And checkout the chorus section of this song.

These guys are maybe a bit too much like a younger version of Dream Theater, but with a better singer..

And like I said, these are great concept albums. It's amazing one that one guy wrote all this and played most of the instruments on it. I think it has 6 different singers on it. It's a deep album.

This is another album the above guy did.

Well, I like some stuff over Black Clouds Silver Linings. Octovarium had about 4 songs I liked. And Six Degress had a lot of good moments. I have to admit that since Portnoy left I haven't liked them at all, save for a song here or there.

"Hey, we're going to make an album with 34 tracks about robots..."

Where's a record exec with a good back handed bitch slap to Petrucci when you need it

In a world of robots where music has been forgotten but there's a "chosen" one who can bring it back. Haven't we heard this tale before?

Oh, here's another band....on the fence about these guys. They show some promise.

And they remind me a little of these guys.
