Duncan YJM pickups played through 5150's

Here's a bunch of videos featuring Duncan YJM pickups played through 5150's. I've got an 80's Kramer loaded with a Suhr Aldrich and 2 DiMazrio HS-3's. I'm gonna order an SSS pickguard and load it with 3 Duncans I have on my shelf: YJM bridge and 2 Vintage Rails. That way I won't have to but a Strat style guitar. I'll just swap pickguards as my mood dictates.

They are excellent pickups. I got a YJM strat not too long ago because I wanted to learn how to play with a scalloped neck and wanted a different flavor of guitar as I'm normally a humbucker guy, and turns out the pickups are a lot cooler than I thought they would be. They kinda blew me away. Wasn't expecting them to be nearly as fun as they are.

Here's a couple clips I banged out on a Mark IV when I was trying to figure out how to dial an amp to suit them. Funny enough this amp was actually dialed pretty thick and dark. The pickups are normally a bit more stringy and, well, stratty sounding than this.

edit: Found another clip. Again, please excuse this one, it's basically a scratch track for tone testing, recorded with another amp, and the playing is janky and rough, but I think it shows how the pickups retain a stringy/stratty quality even though they're actually pretty punchy and bold overall.

Something else, I don't usually get as absurd with the vibrato as these clips show but that's the other thing about YJM strats. Scalloped boards are so good at letting you get under the string and locking your finger into a slip-proof grip on them that it's hard not to do insane bends and vibrato at every opportunity. Part of learning how to play a scalloped guitar, turns out, is not just learning how to lighten your touch, but how to restrain yourself from doing exaggerated zakk wylde bends constantly, something I clearly need to work on, hah.

I love my YJM Strat with the SD YJM pups. Would be nice to test the Dimarzio HS-3 as well!

I have owned Yngwie Strats with both the DiMarzio HS-3 sets and the Duncan YJM set. My current Yngwie Strat has the YJM set.
Thinking about it, I miss the DiMarzios. At that time I thought they were very weak pickups. However, when I go back and listen to old demos I did with the HS-3's I kinda prefer them to the YJMs.
The HS-3's were more vintage and Strat- sounding.

Those are about the only single coils I’m interested in….
I will continue to preach about my Planet Tone pickups. Please check them out if you haven't. I absolutely have been shocked at fullness, thump and growl from the Strat set I got from them. At like $125 for a full set....you can afford to try them out. I am not personally a David Gilmour fan or anything, but I picked up their DG set several years ago and they are the BOMB. The YJMs are cool for sure, not trying to go off the rails too much.

Don Knotts vibe real hard:
