so how is it that you can theoretically run one of these in your serial effects loop successfully?

wouldn't the preamp section of the "host" amp significantly color the outcome of the module's tone?

let's say i want to run an E2 with a vox and a COD in the loop of my TOL 100;

i plug gtr into the TOL head input jack, signal then passes through the TOL preamp section, then i take a send from the TOL fx loop, into the E2, out from E2 into tc gforce, then into TOL return.

i figure i'd keep the channel select on the TOL set to channel one clean, but I'm still passing through the clean channel 1 gain, tone, presence, and master to get to the E2 right? or am i missing something?

THEN-

how do I totally bypass the E2 to utilize just the TOL ch1/2/3/4 voices and my rack fx inserted in the loop?

sorta confused about this whole potential setup :confused:

This baffles me as well...

Well, I guess the Mod100 (or 50)s Chassis's Preamp V1 tube doesnt have any tone stack.

But you're right, it seems like the signal would need to "jump" over the modules in the actual head, straight thru to the module in the E2, THEN out to your actualy FX and such... Like, the E2 would need to make the head-modules disabled or something.

That E2 would sure come in handy in recording situations. Even less work and less swapping.

I'm guessing it works similar to how the "Insert" function in a Lexicon MPXG2 works.

If you are using a Series effects loop, you can just run into the "return" jack and bypass any gain stacks in the amp.

First let me explain how I am guessing they will have you wire the E2. (I could be wrong, but this is my educated guess).

Guitar -> Guitar Input on the E2
Amp Preamp out on the E2-> Guitar input on the Amp
Effects Send of the amp -> Effects input on the E2
Effects output on the E2 -> Effects Return of the amp

Basically this is how I wire up the Lexicon MPXG2. If I turn off the "Insert" on the Lexicon MPXG2 it basically causes creates a circuit that bypasses the signal being sent to the "Guitar input of the amp" and sends it to the Lexicon's preamp instead. The E2 should have a way to "true bypass" the amp's preamp stack, and route your guitar signal to the modules, and only send audio the the effects loop return jack.

Jeff can correct me if I am wrong, but I would assume they are going to implement it like that.

ahhh, so the E2 would have two loops...Loop A to route E2 gtr input to host amp preamp section, bypassing the E2 modules when Loop A is active, and conversely bypassing host preamp and running through modules when Loop A is off

and another Loop B to insert fxs, prior to returning back to host amp return jack.

that would work...so the E2 would need to:

1) switch between modules
2) switch between modes in the module
3) turn loop A off and on

i don't *think* there is a need for Loop B to be switched off and on...simply turn off fx device via midi....unless fx is pedal(s) in which case a switchable loop would be desirable.

on second thought, for simplicity and cost, there may be no need for Loop B...just the main out from the E2 feeding FX prior to returning to host amp.

what may be more beneficial is a level control for the Loop A return to match the level of E2's output feeding fxs.

Is there any way for this to work with an M4?
Maybe use a Tonebone Looper
Having 4/8 channels extra going through my Marshall would be fun.

As it is I am wanting TWO M4s so I can have 8 modules in my rack and be able to access almost any amp sound........... :2thumbsup:

That'd be an awesome additional feature for the m4 for sure. I have no idea if that's even feasable, but you can definitely do that same thing a number of ways. I have a sound sculpture ABCadabra I think might do the trick, and Psionic audio also has a preamp switcher that seems really well thought out and would work.

The E2 will have to have some "master volume" for the modules going out for jus this reason. I don't seem them making this a preamp and a looper, except to loop the amp'e preamp. I would assume it will be switched by MIDI for sure.

I used to do something similar to what you are wanting w/ my old JCM 800. I had 4 different preamps that I used (including the JCM800), and I used a GCX audio switcher to do it. Basically I set it up like this

Guitar -> Input of GCX Loop 1
Send of Loop 1 -> JCM 800 input
JCM 800 EFX Loop Send -> Return of Loop1
Output of Loop1 -> Input of Loop2
Send of Loop 2 -> Input of Pre 1
Output of Pre1 -> Return of Loop2
Outpput of Loop2 -> Input of Loop3

and so on.

So I would just switch whatever loop on to get what preamp I wanted. Basically you could get 2 M4's, or 4 M4's, or 1 M4 and a regular amp, or an M4 and a Mod50 and that could be the type of setup you get :).

Wonder when the E2 will be released.

To quote "Spaceballs" ......

When will then be now???? "SOOOON" :)

I think September / October time frame!

When available? How much? :)

Not soon enough! Jeff said in the sticky thread that they are working on the mod50's right now and that the E2 is on hold because of a midi glitch. In the mean time, I'm saving up :)
