Well, I must say I think this is a great combination to own. Even though I loved the stock SL2, I like now how my EG3/4 is fairly different from my SL2X. Before, I was able to get them somewhat close, not really now though.
As much as I loved the SL2 I felt I wanted to better cover classic rock to 80s/90s hard rock and metal better. Do you all think the X does this better? I am talking Led Zep to Dokken(Lynch tones) to Jake E Lee, to early 90s Alice in Chains Facelift era? I don't find the SL2X maybe as versatile as the SL2 because it doesn't do the smoother, hard rock tones like Billy Howerdel (APC), and other modern hard rock players using modded Marshalls. However, that is where the EG3/4 fills the void. Unlike some, with the 500pF cap mod and some EQ trickery, the EG3/4 does rhythm and lead very well....and provides that thick, smooth high gain tone that allows me to get those APC type tones.
It is almost like with these modules I can cover classic Marshall to modded Marshall to Diezel meets Bogner tones.
Am I the only one?
Seriously though, the jury is still out on the SL2X for me till I can use it with the guys at a jam session. I need to see if it is too strident or not thick enough. I know I always loved the SL2 with the band! Time will tell. Unfortunately, I am not playing much these days, just at home once in a while, so it could be a while.
