Well, I must say I think this is a great combination to own. Even though I loved the stock SL2, I like now how my EG3/4 is fairly different from my SL2X. Before, I was able to get them somewhat close, not really now though.

As much as I loved the SL2 I felt I wanted to better cover classic rock to 80s/90s hard rock and metal better. Do you all think the X does this better? I am talking Led Zep to Dokken(Lynch tones) to Jake E Lee, to early 90s Alice in Chains Facelift era? I don't find the SL2X maybe as versatile as the SL2 because it doesn't do the smoother, hard rock tones like Billy Howerdel (APC), and other modern hard rock players using modded Marshalls. However, that is where the EG3/4 fills the void. Unlike some, with the 500pF cap mod and some EQ trickery, the EG3/4 does rhythm and lead very well....and provides that thick, smooth high gain tone that allows me to get those APC type tones.

It is almost like with these modules I can cover classic Marshall to modded Marshall to Diezel meets Bogner tones.

Am I the only one? :D

Seriously though, the jury is still out on the SL2X for me till I can use it with the guys at a jam session. I need to see if it is too strident or not thick enough. I know I always loved the SL2 with the band! Time will tell. Unfortunately, I am not playing much these days, just at home once in a while, so it could be a while.

I think you're on to something. I was really missing my SL+ when I upgraded everything to Egnater, and my M4 came with an EG3/4. But I was thinking of selling my 3/4 to pay for the SL2 I'm getting when I decided to see if there're usable tones I'd be losing for the tradeoff, and there sure are, but I couldn't really get them until I got my Dual 75 to amplify the EG3/4 correctly. Now I'm gonna probably keep them both. The 3/4 is like a smooth lead compared to the vicious SL2 which although I was completely happy with the SL+, I'm dying to mod to SL2X, but the SL+ was my best tone with the full band.

Both modules are in the M4 and are used regularly. I think they work great together. SL2x is the nasty cousin to the EG3/4.
My favorite module is the EG3/4 but I like how the SL2X has the extra bite and snarl in contrast to the EG.

So you have a stock SL2 now? I agree, it is great and I still miss some things about it since going to the SL2X. You mentioned the EG3/4 as smooth lead but I think it does so much more....it is a great modern, dark rhythm tone as well!

The description on the Egnater site says the SL2X does Van Halen well. I thought early VH was mostly a plexi? If so, wouldn't the SL be better? That said, I thin you can get very close to Plexi with both the Bassman channel B(using a boost or GnR mod) or the SL2(Xor X) channel A.
