EG3/4 or SL?

So I am heavily considering consolidating my EG3 and 5 singles for a 3/4 or SL. I was A/Bing the EG3 to VX B channel and dialed in a comparable tone. I also have a BMAN and COD so my clean and lead tones are pretty set. I'm looking for something to fill the rhythm void, which both of my singles do, but missing that extra channel is bugging me.

I love the 5. Used to have a dually but could never really use channel B. I don't need a ton of gain but really want a thick, chewy, rhythm tone.

Any modular guys with some tales of rhythmic bliss please chime in.

I'd go for the SL. It is thicker than a real Super Lead and will be well-suited for rhythm playing.

The SL is straight up rock, nice and open/big sounding. It's not ultra high gain, but I'd say good for anything other than heavy metal you know. Easily can do contemporary rock kind of thing.

The eg3/4 feels like it has more gain, and has a darker, "smokier" sound. Really awesome for leads, and great for rhythm too. You did mention you wanted thick and chewy, I think the EG3/4 is just that, thick and chewy.

really hard to go wrong with either, more depends what you're going for. Some find the eg3/4 a little darker than they like for rhythms. Personally, I really like both for rhythms, but they're really different sounding. I'd say eg3/4 think more lower mid emphasis, and SL more mid mids, and less saturated. Any points of references/tones you want?

I'd go with SL or SL2. The SL has already been described above, so no need for a re-hash. However, the SL2 might also fit the bill and provide more versatility. Channel A dialed back will get you into the SL's territory, but then Channel B of the SL2 will give you much more gain than either channel on the SL - if you dial it in that way.

It just so happens I am selling a dual channel SL2 and a dual channel EG5 at the moment. PM me if interested.

Cheers,

Hmm as far as points of reference I can list a ton. Billy Gibbons, Jerry Cantrell, Adam Jones b4 the VH4, Tom Morello, Dean Deleo, Steve Clark/Phil Collen, Justin/Dan Hawkins, Nick Hexum, Dave Grohl, Pete Koller, and Pete Townsend to name a few.

I really love all of the clips I've heard from both the 3/4 and SL. I know they both will fill the job nicely. I want both

you've gotten to the real answer we've all been skirting around: you need both

There's some variation in those tones, some which are more SL, some are more 3/4...

Btw, for dave grohl, I'd say VX channel B can nail that tone. I was so surprised by that module, because I probably wouldn't have bought it had it not come with my amp, but it's probably my favorite module.

As mentioned above, the SL2 is a good merger between the SL and 3/4. Personally, I like the SL and the eg3/4 more than the SL2. The SL2 is probably one of the most popular modules though, so take my advice with that in mind. The SL2 is no slouch and I still play often, and I agree if you wanted the best mix of the SL and EG3/4, the SL2 would be it. After all, the 3/4 is a darker, tweaked SL2.
