Anyone have this as a regular module?

I had the MHG and miss it sometimes but I THINK I can get my EG5 to sound close.

I use the SL2 a lot but am thinking of the EG3/4 for seomthing darker and maybe a different flavor. Anyone? I hear the lead tone is great and still has good midrange cut like the SL2 and EG5? The MHG for some reason was swallowed by Marshalls. Sometimes I still miss it.

I have the following setup in 3 slots of my M4..in order of increasing gain and also 'sizzle' / agression

EG3/4, SL2 and EG5 ... I love it.

The EG3/4 is dark and smoky and smooth, I love it..the SL2 is teh perfect high gain Marshall and the EG5 a more modern sound but still has a voicing rooted in 80s metal.

Technically I could also point out that slot 4 has the UXL..which is straight out modern metal.

Thats pretty much how I would describe it. Plenty of gain for more modern stuff too.

The way I use my module is this:

I use chnnel A for lighter rhythm and lead and channel B for heavier rhythm and ead. This is perfect with the SL2 and will cover ANY style I wish. The EG5 to me has too much gain to the point that the module is nt usable in any band scenario. I m hoping maybe the EG3/4 or maybe going bac to th MHG will help.

I've been a fan of the EG3 and 4 since the single module days, actually back to the TOL amps. I could live on the 3/4 module alone to be honest.....but that wouldn't be any fun... ;) Anyway, IMO it's is the perfect balance of gain and tone. It has a wide variety of sounds in it and channel A is very dynamic if you don't dime the gain. While it is a warm sounding module, the highs are still there....Kinda buttery highs like the old Hiwatts. For me, the perfect module and I've always been a "Marshall Guy". I really dig the SL2 as well, but I always tend to end up on the EG3/4.
The EG5 is very cool too, but sometimes a little too strident. I would definitely try the EG3/4.

Thanks Bro, how does the EG3/4 cut for you? Are both A and B capable of good rhythm and lead tones?

I am going to try ECC81 tubes in my EG5 and if I am still not thrilled, I am going to trade for the EG3/4, if someone would like make the trade. A buddy had the SM4 for his Randall which is apparently a gained up EG4 and it didn't cut the band mix. I think I might be pretty happy with the EG3/4 and the SL2. I may even look at some modified Randall one channel modules since I have a great boost pedal in the loop for leads.

Did you try the MHG? I thikn I liked that over the EG5, but cut was not good next to a Marshall.

The 3/4 cuts just fine. Both channels offer both rhythm and lead tones and sometimes I will use channel A (EG3) to solo because it is a different flavor and gain structure. I get more complements on my tone from that module than the others. The midrange is very punchy and thats why even though the highs are tamed a bit, the sound still cuts....it's the mids.
I love the SL2 but the EG3/4 to me is a better version of it. It is also very different than the EG5. Acutally I had an MHG that I had modded to my currentEG5. I miss it to be honest. I really liked the sound because it was so full and not like anything else. I still think about picking another one up.
Good luck with your quest.

The EG5 is tighter than the MHG and with the Sovteks it sounds great. Roll back the presence and treble a lot and the EG5 gets close to the EG5 with better cut in a band. The MHG has trouble there! I am afraid to let go of the MHG now but they pop up used now and then. I still want an EG3/4. Probably sometime this year I'll get one.

I also want some Randall modded modules like the XTC and Plexi.

I have spent a while tweaking the EG5--I dig it. I really liked the MHG as well though. +1 on the XTC- I have a modded XTC module that sounds great. Very versatile just using the guitar volume.

Have you had good luck using the modded XTC for rhythm and lead? I hear the mids are great! Like nothing Egnater offers.

If you're looking for insane metal rhythm, I don't think Egnater has anything like the Ultra/UltraXL in their line up either...The EG5, whilst being insanely high gain, still has that voicing ya can't shake.

I was insanely fortunate to score a custom Egnater UXL module...2 channels of tight, truly metal rhythm

Nah, I can get all the insane tone out of the EG5 if needed but actually it is much calmer with the Sovteks!

Why are you selling the AWESOME 5881s? ;)

Because they suck...I loathe the tone of the Tung Sol 5881s compared to the Sovteks.

Interesting, the Sovtek 5881s you like much more than the Tung Sols........I do like the Sovs for pres in the MOD 50. I may even try the Sovs in the head again.

With the EG3/4, I have read more than once that you can get EG3/4 tones with the SL2 so if you have the SL2, it may not be sensible to own the EG3/4.
