I am debating between the EG5 and SLX2 for my gain channel. I'll primarily be using it in either a 60-80's cover band or 80's - current cover band and maybe some modern rock originals.

I have been digging the SLX2 clips I've heard so far but need to find some EG 5 as well. So far, the SLX2 clips sound more saturated - which I like.

If you've seen Bill's awesome SL2x demo on the Egnater home page that will give you a great idea of what that module can do with the gains run a lot higher than I use. I like the A channel about 11:30 o'clock and the B channel about 12:00 o'clock.

The SL2x is great for AC/DC, GNR, Led Zep & all classic rock type stuff.

The EG5 also has that Marshall type vibe, but has more gain (more compressed) and is voiced higher in the upper mids. Great for Ratt, Motley Crue, metal hair band stuff.

Korey,

I think you will like the SL2x. I think its more its a better fit than EG5 for the earlier stuff you want to do and it will also work for the later stuff too. Both are killer, but for your use I think SL2x is the way to go. Its shipping out tomorrow. You will enjoy it!

Either will do the job nicely but the SL2X is probably a better fit for your application. (60's - 80's)

Is the low end looser on the SL2x than the EG5? What about the SL2?

Yes, it is looser on SL2X, but not "loose". In order of tightness I would rate them:
EG5
SL2X
SL2

SL2 is a smoother and slightly less aggressive version of SL2X. SL2 might be better for some of the 60's and 70's stuff but SL2X is probably the best of the 3 to cover 60's-80's.

The SL2 is a bit round sounding in the bass frequencies where the Friedman BE/ HBE mod will make it tighter for sure. The SL2X should be comparable in feel to the Friedman. The EG-5 is going to sound the chunkiest because of the extra compression and EQ shape. For me, the EG5 is the module that comes closest to the ENGL or Diezel type of high gain and EQ.The SL2X for me is like a really well modded MArshall that can do rock and metal equally well.

+1!

I have a EG5 and a SL2X and could play a Friedman modded HBE - exactly the same experience.

Well, the EG5 is more focused in the upper mids, which makes it 'thinner' for riffing than an Engl Invader or Savage. I've A/B the Savage and EG5 quite a bit throught the same setup (Engl 4x12, V30) and the EG5 cuts, while not sounding as massive. I play with the EG5 in a two guitar metal outfit, and the other guitarist plays the Invader. We complement each other very well, but the Engl definitely has more headroom. I need to boost and dial up the bass a lot, and really drive the power section to get the desiered beef. I'm currently using EL34's and might change to 5881, which might tame the upper mids somewhat ... ? The HBE seems to be awesome though. The comparison that John C did really gave me GAS for one.

To me, the EG5 is a one trick pony, and the trick it does suits me fine for a certain application, but only up to 85%.

My solo tone with the EG4 stomps on the Engl though :D

I recorded an album with an Engl Savage 120, and it's the shit for TIGHT modern hi gain riffing. But I've yet to hear (yes, hear) a satisafctory lead tone from any Engl amp.

.

I have both the EG5 and the SL2X.
I think SL2X will suit your needs the best so I would go for that one first! :)

I've never had a noise or hum issue with my Mod100, did you have a noise issue?

Not really. But since I play mostly high gain. So anything I can do to keep the noise down I will try.
