Egnater 1x12 cab vs. Avatar 1x12 cab

Hi,

I'm seriously GASing for an Egnater Rebel 20, but I'm also trying to figure out what kind of 1x12 cab to pair up with it.

I currently own an Orange Tiny Terror that I play through an Avatar 1x12 cab (the cube-shaped "Traditional" G112). I'm using a broken-in Celestion G12H30 speaker (the Hellatone 30) in this cab, which has a partially open back.

When I get the Egnater, I think I have two options for a new cab:

A) Get the Egnater 1x12 cab with the custom voiced Celestion 80 -- I think this is a closed back cab.

...or...

B) Get another Avatar 1x12, but this time with something different, like a broken-in Vintage 30 (the Hellatone 60). I'd probably get another open backed cab simply because it would be easy enough to retrofit it as a closed back cab if I decide the V30 is too "ice-pickey".

How does the Egnater cab stack up against the cab/speaker combination I currently have? I've read some early reviews that suggested the Egnater cab sounded a lot like a G12H30. If so, I'd probably want to get something from Avatar that gives me more tonal options.

OK. Rather than comparing the Egnater 1x12 cab to a 3rd party cab with a G12H30, can someone give me a quick thumbnail sketch of this cab, along with the tone from the custom-voiced Celestion 80? Thanks.

When I got my Rebel, I played through a pair of my buddies Avatar 1x12's with Hellatone 60's.
I didn't really like it.
Got the Egg 1x12 from GC, and it sounds great.
At the very least, it's an excellent match for the Reb.

Yeah, I figured that the Egnater 1x12 would sound great with the Rebel 20. But I'd really like to get another Avatar 1x12 cab so I can make a mini-stack for use with the Tiny Terror or the Rebel 20.

I wonder what's the closest thing to the "custom voiced" Celestion 80 in the Egnater? It's a ported but closed back cab. If you were trying out an open backed Avatar, that would have made a difference.

This is what my G112 looks like, (except it's finished in orange tolex...which also really helps the tone!).

I use the Rebel 20 w/ an Avatar 1x12 w/ a Celestion CL80, and it sounds friggin awesome!

Is that a closed or partially-open backed cab? If I end up getting another Avatar, I'll get another partially open back G112 like the one pictured above, then make a screw-in cover for the cut-out so I can experiment with different backs.

I just listened to some Classic Lead 80 samples on the Celestion webiste. Sounds nice. Very different from the G12H30.

I play the rebel threw the OS 112 egnater cab with the CL-80 and it truly sounds great, better than all the other amps threw that cab!

Most of the reviews for the CL-80 on Harmony-Central describe it as great for lead stuff (not surprising, given the name) but not-so-great for chording (which bites because I'm a rhythm player). It's also apparently better when overdriven than it is when clean.

I'm actually going through a clean phase right now as I get all the dirt I need from my Tiny Terror & G12H30.

Hmmm...that's kinda weird. I am actually getting the Egnater 1x12 in the mail within the next day or so to use with my Einstein. If it sounds as good/better, it will be replacing a G12H30 2x12 cab I have! It seems we are in a similar boat!

I will get back to you in the next couple days to let you know how it worked out!

You know: in terms of pure cosmetics, it's hard to beat the look of the Rebel 20 sitting atop an Egnater 1x12 cab...

I'm really happy with the tone of my G12H30 Avatar 1x12, and if the Egnater's Celestion 80 has a tone not unlike the G12H30, I could live with having two mis-matched cabs... ;)

I just got my Egnater 1x12 in, and WOW. I love this thing. Compared to my G12H30 2x12 cab, this cab is more focused, has a lot more clarity, but still has enough warmth for my needs. The G12H30 cab definately sounds more "vintage," which I love...but IMO it breaks up a little too much, which is definately obvious when compared to the Egnater.

All I can say is that the Egnater has tons more clarity and GREAT frequency response for my tastes. Rhythms sound amazing through this, just as amazing as leads...so I don't know what all the hoopla is about concerning that. I feel like the rhythms/leads are better than the G12H30 cab...and I've always loved my G12H30's. It doesn't make sense to me!

You should definately check out this cab. Its a different sound, and I think it might even pair up well with the G12H30 cab. I haven't tried that yet, but I just wanted to post ASAP about how much I love this cab with my Diezel.

For reference, I usually use my Einstein for mid-gain and cleans for these smaller gigs/church.

Hope this helps!

Great mini-review! Thanks for the feedback. One quick follow-up question: I'm a living room jammer, and as such I play my Tiny Terror at a very low volume setting. Even so, my G12H30 cube-shaped 1x12 cab sounds great.

How does the Egnater 1x12 sound at low & very low volumes, both clean and dirty? Obviously, at higher volumes my Avatar cab really comes alive, but it has a nice low-volume mojo going for it, too. (I wonder if this is because the G12H30 is a 30-watt speaker versus an 80 watter for the Egnater...)

It really doesn't sound much different at lower volumes. Its very consistent, even though it is a higher powered speaker. The only thing I can stress is that it sounds more "polished" and has much more low-end to it (and fullness). My G12H30 cab has a nice vintage sound, but when I crank it, it flubs out on me and almost sounds like a low-wattage amp pushed too hard. This could be due to the fact that I'm using a 100W head into a 60W cabinet... , but my 4x12 w/ G12H30s and V30s sounds amazing and the Egnater satisfies my need to somewhat reproduce that bigger sound that it has.

I wish I could record some samples for you to hear, but I got nothin! My advice: If possible, take your head/amp and Avatar cab into Guitar Center and plug up to the Egnater cab and listen for yourself. That's common advice I know, but you don't really know until you try!
