I PMed a few guys I know on the board but I thought I would start a post. If you all don't mind. :)

I am at a crossroads. I bought a fat strat form the 90s and realized it has 21 frets so it must go. I may also sell my 94 LP Standard. I mostly play my 2004 LP. So, I am down to an LP, an SG and a PRS CE-22.

One thing I don't have is a good acoustic and was thinking that route or a fat strat that is newer and with 22 frets! LOL. I have an old Ibanez Artwood and was thinking a Takamine. Heck, I could probably get a used fat strat and an acoustic.

I need some advice man. Or, maybe I should skip the guitars and realize I found my main guitars.
I was even thinking or a Rebel combo or Randall MTS 50 combo for rehearsal, etc.

  You're all over the place, bro!

A few things to ponder:

1. Do you need a single coil guitar in your arsenal?
2. If so, do you really need the extra fret?
3. If you go acoustic, please don't get a Takamine. Get a nice Seagull or something for that price.
4. Get something that you won't lose cash on if you sell it so you don't have any buyer's remorse.
5. I bet there are new modules coming soon--may want to hold out for those...

Well, whenever I have extra money, the GAS kicks in! LOL.

I do need the 22 fret. We play covers that need it. For example, a few Rush songs we play I hit the 22nd fret on the solos.

I love single coil clean, but no...I don't NEED it at all. More a nice to have thing. Know what I mean? I just love the feel of strats. Maybe a double fat strat! LOL. But I like a decent trem like on my PRS CE-22.

I tried a lot of acoustic and like Taks for an acoustic electric. Seagull??????

Takamine's always sounded thin and boring to me. I much prefer Taylors, Martins, Breedlove, Rainsongs, etc. Much fuller, open sounding. If I were playing acoustic 100% of the time..I'd have a Rainsong, a Taylor, a Martin, and a Graphite top Ovation to play out

Eric, actually hate Ovations. Can't stand them. I had a Martin, nothing special to me, didn't play all that great. When we did acoustic gigs, I always got burried by the other guitarist who played a Takamine. Since then I have been playing a bunch of Taks and love em. Taylors are too expensive for me. I mostly play acoustic at home, never gig these days with one but an acoustic electric would be cool for recording.

I would never use an acoustic electric for recording- Get a good sounding acoustic and mike it up!

Maybe it boils down to this:

The three electrics you play are all humbucker types- Maybe you want to get something with some single coils?

If you play the acoustic live, maybe a Takamine with a built in pick up is the way to go. If you don't, get a straight ahead acoustic.

:D

richedie: If you like the Takamine's that's cool--everyone has different ears. I believe all but the very high line (or even that, not totally sure) are made by Samick. They make about 80% of the acoustics out there. Distributed by Kaman Corp. Not that sonically it matters, but IMO there are so many other better acoustics in the $500 range (or whatever range you are looking at). They were hot in the early 90s but when I worked in retail (97-2000) they were poo.

I'm with Len--get a good quality solid top acoustic and mike that sucker instead. I see piezo's value for live applications (I have one in my Driskill) but not in a studio application, but again, my ears/logic are different than others'.

I say grab a single coil guitar and have a complete arsenal.

Just a bit curious - what does your Ibanez Artwood lack that you will get from a Takamine?

I've been through a lot of acoustic guitars over the years and actually ended up with a Ibanez AW-300 that is the best sounding guitar I've ever owned (have compared it to Takamine's, Taylor's, Furch's, Martin's and a lot of cheaper guitars and I haven't found any that matches "the tone" of the Artwood). I mounted a B-band system on it but I barely ever use it - I tend to get much better sound just miking it with a decent condensator mic even when playing live.

About the strat - why don't you just buy a new neck for it (Warmoth, USACG, etc...). I needed to refret my old Squier JV-82 but bought a new 22 fret neck for it instead, since it would cost me about what the fretwork would have done.

Rich

I think you need to decide what direction you want to go and base your decision on that.
What are you trying to accomplish. Would you prefer a strat, or an acoustic? Do you need another amp? Is there a particular goal in mind at this point??

I always end up regretting purchases I've made without a particular need. It may just be me, but I try not to spend my money if I'm not sure of the benefit.
