What is the scoop on the power amp on this sucker?

You always hear that 100 watt heads or 100 watt power amps sound ballsier and beefier than 50 watters. However, I think that can have more to do with the quality of the power amp. I think manufacturers cut corners with 50 watt power amps. I guess the transformer is where the cost cutting comes in.

A friend of mine installed a Mercury magnetics transformer into his Marshall DSL100, but I believe Egnater uses some very good transformers in their MOD 50s.

MM is a very good transformer, but the Heyboers used by Egnater are top notch and right up there with the DeYoungs used in the SLO-100 IMO (which is often considered the best).

Now, its not exactly apples to apples because alot of other components are different, but Ive had two Soldano amps: Hot Rod 50+XL (w/ MM Transformer) and SLO-100 (w/ DeYoung Transformer). The SLO-100 destroyed it in every way: richness, clarity, definition, depth, feel, etc.

FWIW, I also recall reading that Suhr also uses Heyboers in his CAE and Badger amps.

I have an amp where you can switch between 100 watts and 50 watts. In the 50 watt modes, it has a tiny bit more sag to it, loses only very little volume, still sounds good. Going to 100 watts, the low end tightens up just a little bit, and it a tad brighter, similair sound, just very small differences. not sure if this would count for much, but at least on my current head, i can compare between the 2 modes.
