Absolutely no "need" to be modded out of the box at all. The inherent, signature Egnater tone is awesome. It's a different animal than the Randall stuff. It's a bit more midrangey and rich, the randalls are voiced a bit more towards the aggressive side.
I'm just a lunatic nutcase tinkerer. Spending a few hours swapping out capacitor A for capacitor B, adding in capacitor C, swapping out resistor D... to ME, that's my idea of a good time. For others, not so much!
I'm very, VERY careful when I work on the boards though. Pencil point, low wattage soldering iron, slow and steady, doing it properly with a desoldering wick, etc. On the "mods" that I've done so far, the solder joints are indistinguishable from the factory ones. Nice and clean, no burn marks, no globs.
I think another beautiful thing about the modular system, is that it gives tinkerers, like myself, a chance to do some novice amp-modding at the preamp stage, without having to tear the chassis open, or risk electric shock.
If you get a module, and think "I need a bit more treble" or "I need a bit more bass" or whatever, chances are, it can be done.
