Egnater modules (really) need mods?

Hi,

do you think, that Egnater modules need to be modified (if yes, which would that be)? I see lots of Randall users having their modules modded, but thought, this wouldn't be necessary to Egnater modules. Can you give me your thoughts?

Thanks

They don't need to be modded, just some guys like myself just prefer minor tweaks to already great tone.I for one, really love the SL2 tweaks that Jeff and Eric came up with!!!

Out of the box, they don't "need" anything. Alot of us, however, love to tinker in our never-ending chase of tone :D . They are easy to mod and if you have to send it out to be modded, you don't have send your whole amp. I've had 3 Egnater modules modded--SL2 to GnR, Single channel SL to Custom 45 and SL++ to HBE, both by Dave Friedman.
Love them all, but I didn't need to--just felt like it

It's all about different flavors at this point. Dark Chocolate vs Milk Chocolate.

I love mine and have never had the urge to mod any of them, well maybe except for the Eg5 which i never bonded with. However, once I have them all...I can see myself getting a second one modded just because it's fun (i.e. one day trying otu a GnR, or modded erect)

Nothing ever really "needs" to be modified. A lot of players like the tinkering and customizing aspect. That's what cool about the modular stuff. You don't mod your amp, just the module. We have seen and heard many of the modifications being done. Some are cool and some are questionable. If you get a module modified and you like the change/improvement, then it was worth doing. If not, you can always put it back to stock unless......the modifier has hacked up the circuit board. That makes it a little more difficult to undo. Check with other modular owners about the credibility of the person performing the mods before you do it. Don't ask us because we can't vouch for everyone out there.

Absolutely no "need" to be modded out of the box at all. The inherent, signature Egnater tone is awesome. It's a different animal than the Randall stuff. It's a bit more midrangey and rich, the randalls are voiced a bit more towards the aggressive side.

I'm just a lunatic nutcase tinkerer. Spending a few hours swapping out capacitor A for capacitor B, adding in capacitor C, swapping out resistor D... to ME, that's my idea of a good time. For others, not so much!

I'm very, VERY careful when I work on the boards though. Pencil point, low wattage soldering iron, slow and steady, doing it properly with a desoldering wick, etc. On the "mods" that I've done so far, the solder joints are indistinguishable from the factory ones. Nice and clean, no burn marks, no globs.

I think another beautiful thing about the modular system, is that it gives tinkerers, like myself, a chance to do some novice amp-modding at the preamp stage, without having to tear the chassis open, or risk electric shock.

If you get a module, and think "I need a bit more treble" or "I need a bit more bass" or whatever, chances are, it can be done.

I couldn't have said it better, Nick.

I've gotten my soldering up to that level too. It's REALLY satisfying to swap stuff, have it work, and distinguish the difference. FUN!

I will add:

If you have shaky hands, poor soldering skills, no experience working on a PCB, crappy soldering equipment, and don't know the difference between a resistor and a capacitor, for the love of god, do NOT go near your modules.

Just send them to Jeff!

Working on a circuit that small is really delicate stuff. Definitely requires some finesse and precision.

Thanks Nick,

I'm really a looser when it comes to soldering. But I know, that there is the difference between capacitors and resistors (but don't know, what a capacitor really is doing...).

So I promise, I won't touch the modules.

But sending it to Jeff is a hard thing, cause I live in Germany, and shipping costs are very high over here, plus I have to deal with the customs, and believe me, this is no fun at all!

Is there any chance to buy allready modded modules somewhere? Especially the GnR seems to be an interesting modded module. Egnater modules are not easy to find in Europe, cause they don't sell the module stuff outside USA anymore.

We got a lot of Randall products over here, but I'd like to go with the real thing - so I'm having a M4 coming, will be here by end of the week, loaded with one Egnater module, the SL, just curious, how it sounds compared to th Randalls. If I like it, I will pick up some other modules, but don't have the big money, so I'll have to take my time.

Do you guys think, the GnR is a must have compared to the SL2 (which I'm considering to buy next)?

Thanks,
Eddie

I think Jeff could hook you up,and yes I think it's a MUST HAVE module  long live the GnR :D

Mods I think EVERYONE should own:

T/D
GNR

These two modules in a Mod 50 would cover about as much territory as any four channels avaialable.

Hi,

do you mean a stock T/D?

What's the difference to the Bman?

Cheers

yes, I mean stock T/D.

I've owned the T/D, and the Bman.

The Bman, to my ears, sounds dull with humbuckers on the A channel, plus it doesn't stay as pristinely clean as I prefer. Bman channel B is cool, but it didn't blow me away.

HOWEVER, Bman, ch A, through a Mod 50 with stratty SINGLE COILs, sounds freakin' ridiculously good.

The only two mods I've sold: Bman and Erect. I don't really regret it at all since I love so many other modules.

Thanks, man,

I hope, I won't get lost in the module affair. You can hardly find them here in Europe, and ordering from USA means high shipping costs and additional 23% tax and custom fees - so you have to know exactly, what you want. Just testing an the throwing it to ebay is an expensive affair - well at least for me.

Cheers

Germany, you have to try Salvation mods, it is awesome! Shipping should be reasonable as well

Any further information? How can I get in touch with this guys?

I am here in UK and have two M4s and a Randall RM4 too and a whole bunch of modules (both Eggie and Randall)

I have been lucky with ebay a little bit but agree there isnt so much in Europe (yet)

It is not fun but not too difficult. I think when you're sending items temporarily (e.g. for modification) out of EU you have to pay taxes and customs only for the shipping and modification costs while receiving them back. So, it is not that expensive.

You really should check out Salvation's work on the MTS board. It's great and good option especially for EU guys.
