I purchased a Renegade 1 x 12 about 11 months ago. It soon developed crackling noises and would cut out. I assumed it was a preamp tube and contacted Egnater. Nate agreed and sent new preamp tubes but this didn't resolve the issue. I ended up taking it to a repair center about 2 hours away and they found it to be a noisy 6L6 which they replaced under warranty. There's always been an issue with the reverb having a strange sound but after reading threads on this site found that keeping the channel master volumes below 50% fixes that problem. I plugged it in this morning to test some mods on a Strat and the crackling sound is back and the tubes are out of warranty, if it is a tube. Back in the 60's we used to tap the tubes and replace any that made a noise, also looked at the tube to see how it was glowing and go to the local 5 and dime store to test them and replace but it was very non-scientific. Does anyone have suggestions on how to determine which tube is the culprit short of replacing all of them? The crackling seems to be in both channels. I'm about to call and set up another visit to the repair center.

Grab a pen or pencil and LIGHTLY tap on the power tubes one by one and see if you hear any crackling. Also, does this happen if the volume is turned all the way down? What about turning the tube blend all the way to one side and then the other? Does the crackling get better or worse on one side?

check the preamp tubes too, if it's both channels check the PI tube V6. I hope you figure it out.

To check the power tubes: Set each channel's tube mix fully clockwise (EL34) or counterclockwise (6L6).
If the crackling happens only in one of those positions, then you know which tubes to change.

If it happens in both, my opinion would be that it's not the power tubes.

I remember during the first issue (where it was one of the 6L6's) Nate had me got thru a process to pinpoint but it didn't point to tubes.. That's when I thought there was an issue with the circuit or a component only to find out it was a tube. I'll try all of the above and report back. I know tubes can be very frustrating as a lot of the time they're intermittent.

It's best to have enough spare tubes on hand so you can be prepared to swap out any of your tubes at any time to check to see if they all are working.

brand of tubes is also important,i personally have had huge issues with jj's taking a total dump right out of the box, dead shorts, crackling, pop sounds even bias issues where tubes won't even flow correctly ,i like the sound of jj's but their qualility control is questionable,I have NEVER had any of these problems with the wing c's they also sound great and are way more durable and reliable,

Egnater uses Sovtek 12AX7WA's which I've heard can be a little noisy...they're pretty much the standard in many amp brands.
