Dear people,

I have a problem with my Egg R30 combo which I bought a year ago. Overall the amp's clean channel has full filled all my desires for tone and I'm very pleased, while I think the overdrive channel is useless and I do not use it. But that's not the issue. The issue is that since a week or so ago the 11th and 13th fret of the low E string, along with a couple of other places (but not so evidently buzzy/hussy) have started to buzz and hiss like crazy. And when I say buzz/hiss I mean unacceptably, unplayably loud striking sound that is much more annoying than your regular buzz. I have a lot of guitars and have plugged in each of them, tried with 3 separate cables and played with all sorts of settings - it is still horrifyingly buzzing it's ass of on both channels.

I love my Egg and I would like to know how I can fix this issue. I will most probably go to the guitar shop where I got it for a possible repair, but I would very much appreciate if you could give me a hint as to what might me going on (maybe it's just a simple screw than needs to be tightened). I ask this because the people at the guitar shop (and guitar repair clerks in general) have a tendency of writing huge bills for repairs on the basis of low information on the owners side. I want to walk in there with something under my belt.

Thanks a lot...

What you decribe is probably a typical tube issue. The fact it's happening only at some frequencies (frets) is typical but,in my experience,it was more like a "ringing" sound but, anyway,it was impossible to go on playing.Try to put the tube knob all the way to the 6V6 side, play the same fretted notes and do the same on the EL84 side.If it's happening only on one side, you will know which powertubes you have to change. If it's happening on the 2 sides AND on the 2° channel too,it could be a preamp tube. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

As I said, I played with various settings, including the Tube mix and it husses non the less. I will take to my GC for inspection.

I think your tubes making noise is a good suggestion.

I have a ringing sound with my R30 combo at some frequencies. It may be like what you are describing since it happens more at certain frets and on the clean side more. I tried the tube mix and it didn't work for me. When I put the tube mix to one side I still had the rattle or buzz so I had to physically pull the tubes out of the amp one set at a time. I thought it was maybe the EL84s but it turns out the 6v6's sometimes make this noise. I haven't got around to replacing them yet, but when I played the amp with just el84s it didn't make the noise anymore.

Another thing maybe it could come from the handle. I think that can make noise at times. I like the combo it's great for grab and go but from what I've learned they can be real hard on tubes and combos are prone to rattles more than a separate head/cab.

Hope you can narrow this down. The clean channel is real nice on the amp.

maybe a bad tube, or a loose handle screw? od channel useless?- what r u trying to play. I think channel 2 is great, and I play a wide variety of tunes and styles.
