Hi!

I bought the Egnater Rebel 30 Head and 112 Rebel cab last week.

It sounds really great but since last day I always get a noise on the clean channel.

I unplugged the guitar cable
I changed the cable between cab and amp
I turned the volume to zero
I checked the preamp tubs. I think the looking good :D

But there is always a litte noise.

If I change into the OD-channel the noise is gone.

Watt question:
I´am in the clean channel
1 Watt
When should the amp starts to crunch the tone ?

I put the volume to 12 and 3 o clock and changed the watt between 1 and 30 and I heard no big difference.
The amp is very sensitive.
At 8 o clock the volume is zero
At 8:30 I have to watch that the sound isn´t getting to loud. A 1mm change on the volume-knob reacts in a strong increasing of the volume.

Thanks!

Hi Frankster,

I have a little bit of low level hiss on my clean side too.
This is usually from the pre-amp tubes. It doesn't mean they are bad, just noisy.
You can swap them out and see if you can find a quiet one if it bothers you.

At 1 watt your Rebel should break up a little quicker than on 30 watts.
You should also notice a slight volume change.
Its not an attenuator, so dont expect huge volume changes.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi Steedee!

Thanks for the answer.

Know it is clear.
I thought that the watt controller works as attenuator

@Hiss
I talked to my dealer and I could send the amp back for checking.
I think this is the best way to know if everthing is ok.

The noise starts after a week.

The hiss on the clean channel is a common thing for Rebel 30s. I have regular contact with the guys in the shop I bought it from and they kept me up to date on the fact that all the Rebel 30s they had hissed on the clean channel.

I e-mailed Nate at Egnater about it twice at two different occasions.

First time he said:

"This is perfectly normal. The reason being is in the circuitry of the clean channel, the way it is wired is that the channel volume is wide open. Therefore the volume knob acts more like a gain control."

Second time he said:

"The clean channel is just a hotter channel due to its gain structure. You can try different preamp tubes in the V2 location this may help some."

So apparantly it's normal. It was quite a noticable hiss, so I traded mine in for a Renegade head as I wanted more gain on the 2nd channel. Only thing is I've swapped clean channel hiss for a loud fan noise. I can't win!

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Dale

@Mr DK
Thanks.

Oh man.....

I don´t know what I should do.

The watt - controller is just a nice gimmick and don´t help to play quiet.

The clean channel always makes noise.

I was so excited when I saw the Egnater amps , but now

Don't get me wrong, I loved that amp. I just wasn't keen on the hiss and especially it being on the clean channel. For gigging etc you'd never notice the hiss. Even when you start playing you hardly notice it, but it bugged me enough.

There's just a few things small things with Egnaters like that could be fixed and they'd be perfect. They are tone monsters!

Hi!

But I think this is a big problem.

If you put the amp to a higher volume, the hiss gets also louder. And if you take a break in a song you hear the hiss.
You must always use a filter for the postproduction to reduce the hiss.

Thats a big bug of this amp, and I cant life with that.
I give my dealer a chance to check this, but this noise is a no go.

Thanks

My rebel 30 head on the clean channel had a hiss as a noise floor, but it was about the same level as say a JC 120 amp. Noticable but not a deal breaker. For me, the louder I turned up the clean channel, the overall sound got louder and the noise floor did not, so it was very easy to get above any noise floor. If you are not experiencing the same thing, perhaps you need to swap out preamp tubes. you may have a noisy one somewhere.

Well I personally never found this myself. The hiss was a constant and didn't change at all when I turned up the volume which fitted Nate's first theory about the circuitry being done so that the volume was wide open.

If you can't live with it then just take it back. It's a shame it's there in the first place. Surely something like that is easy to avoid?

After changing from Standby into Play position:

I switch from clean into od channel and I get a short thunk, clunk, hollow noise (I dont know the right english word ;) )

After some switching from clean -> od, od -> clean and so on, this switching noise is gone.

Is this normal ?

Thanks

I don't have the hiss on channel one. Only noise on either channel is with single coils and standing right next to the amp.

As for the watts knob you have to make sure your OHM switch on the back of the amp is in the 16 OHM position or it wont work at all, I got that bit of info from Bruce. I had to flip that switch back and forth 3-4 times to get the watts knob to work. Almost like there was a piece of dust or maybe the contacts had a bit of corrosion on them. After I got it workling, with the watts knob at 1:00, I could crank her up then turn the knob all the way left/down and hear a noticable sag.

Another quick test of the watts knob is run the DI out to a mixer with a meter. You should be able to see the change in output on the mixers' meter.

No thunk/clunk when changing channels on mone. Just a short lag or latency.

@duffman

Thats sounds good for me :)

I sent my amp back for checking

I hope they can fix everything, because I like the sound from the amp

Thanks

Any update on this ? I bought A rebel 30 combo 3 days ago. I LOVE the tone, but I have the same clean channel hiss, and a low level 60 cycle buzz from the power amp. Happens even with all controls turned down, regardless of channel selected. Does not increase when the volume is raised. A noise floor as someone else mentioned. You only hear it in a quiet room. Not noticeable probably in any live situation, but if recording, "could" be an issue when not playing and tape running (OK, not tape really, but you get the idea) . Can't decide if I'm being too picky, because it is very low...but neither of my other tube amps do it when plugged into the same outlet.

If I knew they were all this way, I'd live with it because I really like the amp, but if not, I'd like one that's more quiet.

Interested in hearing about anyone experience with this...

Thanks in advance.

I have an Egnater Rebel 30 combo. I love the amp! It's the best sounding amp I've ever owned.

I also have the noise issue, although not so much a hiss noice but a low-level 60 cycle hum. The hum tends to be constant, but becomes even louder when I patch anything into the effects loop, even a just a cable going from the send to return jack will cause it to increase.

I'm not sure how to reduce this noise. Is this a symptom of a possible bad preamp tube or just inadequate grounding inside the amp or something else? The low-leve noise is the only issue I have with the amp. For most gig volumes it's not that noticable, but I do play at a church where things are really quiet on lots of songs so I need to stay quieter when I have to. I'm just looking for some way to bring this noise down a notch or two.

Yes there is hiss on the clean channel. I had in in for repair but nothing wrong. It turned out to be the power tubes. After I replaced them the hiss was 90 percent gone. There is a very tiny bit I can hear but even with the amp cranked it is barly noticed. I attached a clip of what it used to sound like.

Hi lefttygtr!

Thats the same noise that I have.

I also had the amp in for repair, and they said, that the amp is ok.

I bought a Weber Mini Mass 50W powerbreak, and now the hiss is gone.
The powerbreak is really good and the volume is better adjustable.

I have cured the noise problem I was having earlier. I replaced the Dunlop DC Power Brick with a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power ISO 5 and it has reduced the hum by a huge amount. I was getting some noise in my effects loop, even from the effects that didn't use the DC Brick, however there must have been a ground loop causing noise on some of the other un-related effects or something, because the overall hum level is down to the point of being very reasoanble with this new device. I'm thrilled! Now I have my killer amp tones from the Egnater Rebel 30, my favorite effects, and no annoying hum.

I've tried almost all of these battery eliminator products for guitar effects and most of them are complete junk, including this Dunlop DC Brick. The only one that works well, as far as I have seen, is this Voodoo Labs Pedal Power.
