Egnater Renegade Hum Issue on Lead Channel

I've had my Renegade head for a few weeks and freakin' love the tones! The gain is so smooth and tight. My favorite lead channel ever! I've owned Orange, Marshall, Fender, and Mesa amps, but was never completely satisfied. The Renegade has so much versatility and provides my ears with the tone that's been stuck in my head.

I am noticing one issue. I've seen this posted on another forum as well. When I play on the lead channel, the amp is mostly quiet. If I stop playing and leave my hands covering the strings, it's still mostly quiet. But, as soon as I take my hands off the strings, it has a terrible, loud hum/hiss. When I turn the volume down on my guitar, the noise is gone. Does anyone have a clue as to what I'm dealing with, and if so, what are you suggestions for a fix?

I will try another guitar and instrument cable tonight. I will also move the entire rig to a different location in my house, although the current outlet(s) are grounded. Here's my chain:

PRS Stripped '58 -> Monster instrument cable -> Egnater Renegade -> Monster speaker cable -> Orange 2x12 cabinet

If the hum/hiss remains with another guitar and instrument cable, what else could it be?

Thanks for any assistance!

Hi Bitwize,

The fact that you only have the noise when not touching the strings, strongly indicates the guitar, or some equipment that the guitar is near, and not the amp.

Thanks for the reply. I plugged in another guitar and had much less noise. It's still a noisy amp compared to others I've owned, but I am now suspecting a wiring/grounding issue with my new guitar. Geez, this new USA-made PRS should not have a wiring "defect." I'll have my local tech/luthier inspect the PRS tomorrow. Thanks again!

Welcome ,Bitwise !If your guitar has humbuckers, there shouldn't be any hum/hiss.It looks like a grounding issue.Even with your other guitar,it shouldn't be noisy. My Renegade is not noisy at all .I remember someone else here had a problem like yours, not long ago.He did end up solving the problem (ground issue ,if i recall ).You could search the forum. Good luck !

it could be the 12ax7's I've had hums start that drove me nuts and it was the preamp tubes.
