hi,
one of the powertubes (5881) of my einstein 50W combo began to ...well...to vibrate (looks like one of the small springs? inside vibrate) causing bad noise.

the tubes (or that tube) is still ok soundwise, i had to switch to an available 4x12 cab in order to be able to record and that way sound was just fine (if different, of course).

still i need to change tubes and am thinking about trying out other types (like EL34, 6L6,...?) and here is the question:

which tubes can i plug in (adjusting the bias accordingly)? I think 6L6 / 5881 is no problem at all, what about EL34's? EL84 (not possible in my opinion)?

Any comment / advise would be helpful!
best regards
werner

ps: the amp sounds just amazing! anything, all modes, the reverb is superb, i am extremely happy with it (just the weight... :aww:)

The bias pot has a range for most octal tubes as EL34s, 6L6GC, 5881, KT66, KT77, KT88, 6550, . . .

If you prefer the sound of the 6L6 family, I'd go with those: Svetlana 6L6GC
if you want more mid aggression EL34 (STR-B) are the way to go. Normally the choice of Diezel . . .

For biasing there's a tutorial on the website (or just look here) - all you need is a digital multimeter which can read 200mA (Milliampêre).

Good tubesellers are www.tubeampdoctor.com (germany) or www.tubetown.de (germany)

Thanks a lot for that - so as far as i understand it doesn't matter what tube as long as it fits into the socket and doesn't need current out of the range of the bias-pot... are these the only two constraints to it?

thanks for the links too, i guess i'll try out different types in order to find what suits my taste best.

Don't use 6V6GTs - the plate voltage of Einstein is too high for them.

EL84 don't fit into the sockets, also too much plate voltage.

I'd also recommend the Svetlana/SED 6L6GC tubes. I didn't like the Ruby STRB (or something like that) EL34s that came with the amp.
