Einstein 50W - which tubes can be substitute for the EL34?

Hi,

just to be sure not to make a mistake:

I'd like to try my Einstein with a pair of 6L6, which I have in an other Amp. Can I just change the tubes without any amp-modification (of course I have to adjust bias)? Is that possible with 6CA7, KT77 as well?

What about other types, KT66, KT88, 5881 - are that different amps?

Cheers

Ed

Yes, no amp-modification needed, just readjust the bias

Might I suggest using JJ KT77's as an alternative to either EL-34's or 6L6's.
This tube is a high end EL-34 type but has the lows and highs of a 6L6. I have them in my Einstein 50 watt combo and they are amazing.

I didn't get to try them on my Einstein, but I had KT77 in my VH4 for a while and they do sound very good :)

one blew up and I went with a quarted of 6L6.... I'll have to get a new pair so I can have that KT77 quarted as backup. :)

Had KT77 in my Einstein 100W head for while - got back to EL34. But then I guess, I am just plain old EL34 type of guy :) If you ask me nothing gets harmonically richer than a pushed EL34, IMO.
For the record - a custom amp, I got built for me, has pair of 6L6, since it takes only 6L6 and alikes...
However still have the KT77 quartet and the older EL34s that came with Einy - for a backup ...who knows one day - I may go back ...

There's nothing better than trying for yourself, though.

+1 for the KT77. i use them in my VH4. kills the EL34 IMO.
