Einstein Combo sound question

Hello,
I recently acquired an Einstein combo and have some mixed feelings. I live in a college dorm and noise is an issue, so most of the time I slave out of the series loop into cab modeling software on my computer. When I do this, I LOVE it!! It's got incredible tone, even with the modeling.

However, when I play through the amp, I find there to be a lot more mids and the tone isn't well defined. Now I'm only playing at low volumes, slightly louder than the strings on the guitar, so I'm thinking this is it, but I want to make sure. Like any tube amp, I'm sure the tone gets better as volume goes up.

I play a lot of different styles, but right now I'm mainly talking about metal. Has any other combo owner found it difficult to get a metal tone at low volumes, and does it become better when the amp is cranked? I know the tone I want is there because it sounds incredible with the modeling software from the preamp...

Thanks for any responses!

I don't play metal, but I have an Einstein combo. Metal players, as with any other style of player, have their own differing tones. I know the Einstein has the tones in it for metal on ch one, mode three and on ch 2, but as you mentioned, turning the amp up, at least a bit, is where you will start to hear the tones. The tubes have to be working to get the sound out of the amp.

Yes, it can get very loud for a 50 watt amp, and by adding extra cabs to it, you can get really great tones.

As for the modelling software, you are possibly used to listening to the tones it provides you in your room, and not used to the tones the amp has the ability to put out on it's own.

If you have not had the opportunity to crank the amp and get used to the tones it has in it, you are not going to be used to it and will think it is not giving you what you are used to hearing from your modelling amp.

A power attenuator is not the way to go, but in your case, you might want to try one anyway so that you can get the amp's tubes working harder and still keep the volume down. Remember however, that using an attenuator will not give you the same tones as using the amp without one and cranking it up. The is no substitute for unleashing the beast within such a great amp naturally.

+1

listen to this man, he's got the knowledge! :D

he Stephen, how's life my friend?

If you don´t find good metal sounds with this beast... Modelling may give you a scooped sound that fits you if you´re not used to play with good loud amps.

yeah, same here...this happened to me too. I was SOO used to modelers and S.S. amps that I got a MEsa Boogie F-50, and found it nice, great cleans and good crunch, but the "metal" was just not convincing to my ears......hell I even got the Einstein (partly because of this) and after a while my ears just got used to a good tube sound, and now I even like my F-50 for Metal too! (the Einny kicks it's ass, but still, very nice Mesa growl!)

No scooped mids for me!!!

I really wish I could crank this thing. I mean, I know it's got the tone in it cause of the way the preamp sounds, but at low volumes it's just not doing it for me through the speaker. Not that it's awful, I just think I know how much better it can sound.

I guess I'll think about an attenuator. I'm hesitant to do that cause I just don't know if it'll be worth it, but whatever. I'm happy with the slaved tone into cab modeling (which is not to be confused with amp modeling, which I can't listen to), so I guess I'll just have to wait to get home and really hear what it can do.

Thanks for the replies

Hi there Joey, :)
How are you? I received my amp, but I found out that I needed more volume, so it went back to Olaf for the original design Alizée at 50 watts which he had built prior to Little Joe.
It will do what the Little Joe will do but was originally built slightly differently due to the wattage. Olaf decided to use KT77's in it for power tubes.
However, I told Olaf to keep the features that we had discussed, including the power tube saturation, and extra lead staging. All else is the same as the one you are getting.

I think you will be very happy with yours, Joey  . I was thrilled with mine.
Aside from the band being just a wee bit too much for the amp, it was something very special.

Please let me know when you get your amp and how you like it.
Best Regards to you, my friend
Stephen

oh man....sorry to hear the little guy is back to the tech! (it'll sound even better now! haha)

by the way.....needs more volume? hmm where you using it with a 2x12? o a 4x12? now you got me thinking! maybe mine will need more volume....

Hey Olaf....... what do you say my friend? I want to gig with this baby.......I don't want it EXCLUSIVELY for recording  remember I use a 2x12 (100w)... if it's enough volume wise, I'm happy....

what do you say?

My serial is 004/006. Does this mean it was the sixth made in 2004? How do the serials work?

Does anyone know if the Einsteins from when mine was made are different or better/worse than others?

Thanks!

Thanks, that would make sense. I guess that puts my amp at an early '08 production date, so that works.
