Einstein plate voltage question (power tube recomendation)

I am getting a Diezel quite soon. I paid for it back in early Dec, but I will finally be getting it in a few days (but I won't be able to play it until the 24  ). It currently has some Ruby EL34s, but I am thinking about trying some 6L6/5881 tubes in there, or if I can find some that can handle the plate voltage 6V6s. I have heard that there are the older Einsteins have a different plate voltage then the new ones. the serial number I am getting is either 02/003, or 02/008 (I can't make it out from the picture).

I have found an interesting Tung-Sol 5881 tube, but the max plate voltage is 400 VDC. http://thetubestore.com/tungsol5881.html There is the info. Will the Einstein fry these tubes?? If they would can someone recommend a good 6L6/5881 type tube??

Also for preamp tubes what does everyone like. I play a wide variety of music, but mostly hard rock. I like a well defined sound that has a bit of a low end thump, but is not muddy.

Thanks for the help, and I can't wait to be a proud Diezel owner.

Probably. The plate voltage is 480 Volts, the screen voltage (thats the really interesting part nowadays) 460-470V - so too much for the Tung Sols.

Thanks for the answer. I am thinking about some SED wing c 6L6s, or Tung-Sol 6L6GC-STR. I have heard a lot of good things about both of them. I have a few weeks to read about the tubes, and find the right ones.

To be perfectly honest, I would stay with EL34s in a Diezel amp.

IMO 6L6 type tubes have too much low end and not enough high-mids in these amps. Of course, the clean sound will benefit, but the distorted tones will suffer.

The EL34 JJ is a very good sounding tube but not reliable
for manufacture purposes. They work great with a plate
and screen grid voltage up to 450 volts.

TAD is same as Ruby, they get their tubes from Shuguang
in China. Tom at Ruby built an extra selection machine
for us to get low microphonic 12AX7AC5 HG+ tubes for V1 and V2.

Peter - when you state "...not reliable for manufacturing purposes." Would you clarify this? Do you mean in the process of manufacturing the Diezel amps, or just in general? I've been using exclusively JJ E34L in my Herbert for just about a year now at shows, rehearsals and parties with no problems what-so-ever. Also, not the JJ EL34, but the JJ E34L and they still sound fantastic!

I've tried both the High Grade 12AX7AC5 HG & Super High Grade 12AX7AC5 HG+ and yes they are very nice, low micro phonic but just a bit more $$$.
Once I get my paper route job back I'll invest in them x6. :)

There sure seems to be a lot of different opinions about tubes. What is put in the new Einsteins from the factory?? I might have to get a couple of different tubes, and let my ears decide.

Thanks for all the opinions!!

All new Diezel amps come loaded with Ruby EL34BHTs from the factory.

Just joking, you kinda ran into that one.

You have many choices, especially with Diezel amps. So try as many as you can; only your ears can do the final analysis. Everyone has their own opinion of what sounds good to their ears. Like it's said, "One mans trash is another mans treasure..."

Ruby EL 34 BHT is the power tube we are using now. The 12AX7HG and HG+ in the pre amp section (Ruby as well) is what is now standard.

So I guess that is why amps have tone controls

It seems like with some amps there is a general consensus as to which tubes sound the best, maybe it is because the people who buy a Diezel have most likely like me owned too many amps in the past, and have decided to move on to the best, and from owning a lot of different amps really know what they want, and have an ear that can tell a lot of the small differences apart...or maybe the power section uses lass feedback, and lets the sound of the tube come right through...or maybe I am thinking too much (I guess that happens with having about two months between doing the deal, and getting the amp.

I can't wait until the fun of finding the right speakers, cabs, and pickups to really get me the sound that I want.

It is true that tubes can make a huge difference. The EL 34 BHT does really well in MANY ways with our amps. My best advice is to just play the amp as it comes and get to know the amp and so forth. It very well may be perfect as it is.

Not doing this will only take you around the block we have already been around numerous times before settling in on the choice we have for tubes. ;)

Everybody likes and hears differently however I feel confident you will be pleased with it as it is. Good luck and enjoy!

I had a lot of problems with the E34L, Dave.

Interesting, Peter. I guess I got lucky thus far. I love the JJ E34L for the tight, hard-hitting, rich tone and extended overhead. I will say that for my taste I don't not like the JJ ECC803S; too dark and can sound slightly muffled in a high-gain amp.
